CII to leverage tourism opportunities In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the southern regional chapter of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has launched a project for promoting tourism and culture in the south. Christened as Festival of South India (FoSI), the initiative launched by Union Minister of State for Tourism K. Chiranjeevi, aims at harnessing the potential offered by tourism, art and culture of southern States, bringing all stakeholders to a single platform. The CII, through launch of the festival, would organise festivals, once a year, showcasing art, culture, cuisine and rich traditions of the south. The first such festival of five-day duration would be held in Hyderabad in November. The diversity of art and culture in south was astounding and there was a need for building on the inherent strengths to assume a greater role in the global economy, CII president and Godrej Group chairman Adi Godrej said. "There is need for national policy for promoting creativity and this will enable the industry to leverage the opportunities", he said. Mr. Chiranjeevi assured his Ministry's full support to the festival as it was a great potential to promote tourist potential in the south. It would publicise the event in all partner countries while effort would be made to provide necessary support to the CII in organising the event. CII southern regional council chairman G.V. Sanjay Reddy explained the salient features of the new initiative while State special chief secretary Tourism and Culture Chandana Khan welcomed the initiative claiming culture and craft remained largely untapped. Consultative Committee of Tourism Ministry Meets and appreciates the efforts of the Tourism Ministry The Tourism Minister said that his Ministry has set a target to double the receipt of international tourist arrivals by 2016 taking 2011 as base. He said This would mean that our foreign tourist arrivals need to register a growth of 12% per annum. For the purpose, the focus of my Ministry would be to improve existing infrastructure, create new infrastructure, broad base human resource development, overcome seasonality of Indian tourism by developing niche tourism products, expand the range of Indian tourism destinations by developing lesser known destinations and undertake aggressive promotional and marketing activities. Shri Chiranjeevi said that last year, foreign tourist arrivals to the country registered a growth of 5.4% and foreign exchange earnings in rupee terms registered an impressive growth of 21.8%. He said the growth registered in terms of foreign tourist arrivals was significant for our country especially considering the fact that world tourist arrivals as a whole increased only by 3.8% last year. At the same time, he expressed his concern over Indias low share in international tourist arrivals and international tourism receipts. He said, India today receives only 0.64% of international tourist arrivals and accounts for 1.61% of international tourism receipts. To increase Indias share in International Tourism, Shri Chiranjeevi said, My effort is to make India as a round the year destination a destination for 365 days a destination for all seasons. For this purpose, we are developing various niche products like rural tourism, wellness and medical tourism, eco and adventure tourism, golf and polo tourism, film tourism, MICE tourism, cuisine and shopping tourism and cruise tourism. Our wellness and medical tourism products have been very well received in overseas tourism markets and I am happy to inform you that this sector is growing at the rate of around 20% per annum. The Tourism Minister said, while trying to concentrate on the growth of foreign tourist arrivals, we are not going to loose focus on domestic tourism. He said in order to popularise and promote domestic travel, my Ministry has launched a new campaign Go Beyond which means go beyond the obvious. This campaign will help the Ministry develop lesser known destinations, the Minister added. Members participating in the discussion appreciated the efforts of the Ministry and made various suggestion. Expressing concern over recent attacks on foreign tourists in various parts of the country and subsequent advisories issued by the concerned countries, the members requested the tourism Minister to take up this issue with the respective State Governments, more vigorously. The members who attended the meeting were: Shri PC Gaddigoudar, Shri Sripad Yesso Naik and Shri Virender Kashyap (All from Lok Sabha), Dr. Chandan Mitra, Shri S. Thangavelu, Shri Tarini Kanta Roy and Shri Ranbir Singh Prajapati (All from Rajya Sabha). Chiranjeevi is my God! Jai Chiranjeeva! |

UPA is in safe zone: Chiranjeevi Central minister Chiranjeevi has spoken about the UPA Government after DMK withdrew its support from the Centre over Lankan Tamils' issue. In the wake of speculations that UPA was in danger zone, Chiranjeevi has stressed that the government faced no danger at all. He said that UPA has enough majority. While asserting that government would continue till 2014, Chiranjeevi apparently said that the differences between UPA and DMK would be vanished soon. Chiranjeevi's statement is like a tit for tat for all the people-especially in Andhra Pradesh-s resorting in speculations over the UPA's future. All in all, it's a good thing that Chiranjeevi came in to curtain the speculations Chiranjeevi is my God! Jai Chiranjeeva! |
