Safety of tourists remains top priority, says Chiranjeevi New Delhi: Expressing anguish over the attempt to assault a British tourist in Agra, Tourism Minister K Chiranjeevi underlined the need for ensuring safety and security for tourists in the country. Addressing the consultative committee of his Ministry in New Delhi, he said safety and security of tourists are on top of his priority list. He informed the members of the committee that he has immediately ordered suspension of the three-star rating of the Agra hotel involved in the incident. He also said the ministry has issued a show-cause notice to the hotel for cancelling its licence. Chiranjeevi spoke to Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde and requested him to put in place a proper system to ensure the safety and security of tourists especially women and children. He also informed the committee that he has started contacting personally all chief ministers urging them to institute an adequate safety mechanism for tourists in their respective states. The tourism ministry has set a target to double the foreign tourist arrivals by 2016 taking 2011 as base. �This would mean that our foreign tourist arrivals need to register a growth of 12 percent per annum.� �For the purpose, the focus of my ministry would be to improve existing infrastructure, create new infrastructure, broad base human resource development, overcome seasonality of Indian tourism by developing niche tourism products, expand the range of Indian tourism destinations by developing lesser known destinations and undertake aggressive promotional and marketing activities,� he said. Foreign tourist arrivals registered a growth of 5.4 percent and foreign exchange earnings registered an impressive growth of 21.8 percent last year. He said the growth registered in terms of foreign tourist arrivals was significant for our country especially considering the fact that world tourist arrivals as a whole increased only by 3.8 percent last year. At the same time, he expressed his concern over India�s low share in international tourist arrivals. The country receives only 0.64 percent of international tourist arrivals. In order to increase India�s share in global tourism, Chiranjeevi said, �My effort is to make India as a round the year destination � a destination for 365 days and for all seasons. For this purpose, we are developing various niche products like rural tourism, wellness and medical tourism, eco and adventure tourism, golf and polo tourism, film tourism, cuisine and shopping tourism and cruise tourism.� He further said, �While trying to concentrate on the growth of foreign tourist arrivals, we are not going to lose focus on domestic tourism. In order to popularise and promote domestic travel, Ministry has launched a new campaign �Go Beyond� which means go beyond the obvious.� The campaign will help the ministry develop lesser known destinations. APTDC makes headway into pilgrimage, eco-tourism Focussing on the aggressive development of world-class tourism infrastructure, the AP Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) has ventured in a big way into heritage, pilgrimage and eco-tourism. Having registered a systematic growth, both in terms of revenue and tourist arrivals over the years, the APTDC has started focusing on new tourism services and the successful functioning of tourist centres. According to the Socio Economic Survey 2012-13 presented in the State Legislature on Monday, the arrival of tourists till the end of September last year was 23.12 lakh, generating revenue of Rs. 81.55 crore. Identifying the potential eco-tourism spots in the State, the APTDC has revamped and improved facilities. It has successfully implemented eco-projects like Belum Caves (Kurnool district) and Borra caves (Visakhapatnam district). An exotic Jungle destination christened "Jungle Bells" at Tyda, illumination of Ethipothala waterfalls and development of Bhavani river island are some other initiatives taken by the APTDC. Community based eco-tourism is also getting a fillip by roping in the Forest Department. Community Forest Management programmes provide opportunities for jungle walks, forest retreats, wild life tourism, bird watching and trekking. APTDC has identified Maredumilli (East Godavari), Nelapattu (Nellore), Mamandur, Talaona, Nanniyal (Chittoor), Balapalli (Kadapa), Ethipothala (Guntur), Kambala Konda (Visakhapatnam). Agra molestation bid: Hotel's 3-star rating suspended, Chiranjeevi seeks tourist safety New Delhi: Taking serious note of the attempt to molest a foreign tourist in Agra, Tourism Minister K Chiranjeevi today ordered suspension of the three-star rating of Hotel Agra Mahal, where the incident took place. The Tourism Ministry also issued a show cause notice to the hotel asking it why its licence should not be cancelled. Expressing concern over the incident involving a British woman, Chiranjeevi took up the matter with Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde and sought a proper system to ensure safety of tourists in the country. Close on the heels of the gangrape of a Swiss tourist in Madhya Pradesh, the 25-year-old British tourist jumped off her hotel room in Agra to save herself from the alleged sexual assault bid and suffered a leg fracture. While speaking to Shinde, he requested for putting in place a proper system to ensure the safety and security of all tourists especially women and children across the country. Fearing an adverse impact on the tourist flow into the country due to such incidents, Chiranjeevi started an exercise of contacting all chief ministers urging them to institute an adequate mechanism for safety of tourists in their respective states.
