Katthi:Rudraveena for chiru fans is also a grim reminder of how the vast talents of an artist like chiru got wasted while falling to the trap of stardom and the responsibility of catering to masses. I still get goose bumps thinking about few scenes from this movie

Rudraveena , Don't know when the movie came and left theaters, I must have been 8 or 9 years old but still remember vaguely some racist cousins of mine in a get together making fun of chiru for making a flop movie. The comments ranged from "he is only good for dancing cant pull off a serious movie like this" to "he cant pass through as a brahmin with that dark skin" . I felt bad as I was already a fan but on bright side the racist teens grew up to be homosexuals not that there is anything wrong with it (just kiddin) 4 years later finally got hold of the movie on TV. It started off very different to other chiru movies of that era, almost with a touch of satyajit raisic style we are exposed to through the regional language feature films on DD but with some what inferior photography compared to the formers, frame by frame the movie started rolling and I was hooked. The movie starts with a little Brahmin child doing his morning rituals if I recollect properly on the steps of a tank near a temple and right next to him a blind beggar searching for food offered to her and this child looks at her struggle and contemplates whether to stop his ritual which is so dear to him obviously and help her or to continue with his divine chores. The first thing that stroked me was the movie is so gorgeously simple that is pure. Never knew a day in a life can be captured so beautifully on celluloid. Continuing with the scene, a wise guy comes along helps the beggar and questions and enlightens the child and sings the now immortal song "chuttu pakkala chudara chinnavada". And this song with its beautiful and powerful lyrics is consistently relevant to the times preceding the movie and is relevant to the times during the movie and it is almost as relevant even now and it will continue to be relevant to any generation. The lyrics are not complicated and pretentious like sarastwathura jaree gamanamam which most of us cant even understand . The wordings are simple but supremely powerful with message and at the same time very affluent with the lyrical value. Every line is like phedel phedel on the face of selfish, self centered, narcissistic, bigoted people like us who are living their lives ignoring the very basic foundations which laid the roots forming a community. Sample ki "Swargalani andhukovalani thwaraga gudi metlekkevu Sati manishi vedhana chusthu jaali leni silavinavu " Phedel phedel "Karunanu maripinchedha sadhuvu samskaram antey" Phedel phedel "Runam theerchu tharunam osthey thappinchukupothunnava" Phedel "Theppa thagalettesthava eru dhaatagaaney" Phedel phedel phedel phedel phedel phedel If you listen to the song with full conscience and judgment I bet you will be left with a bruised face once its finished. Its powerful man. And then the movie goes on with the little child growing up to be chiru still confused with his choices either to be a responsible son and a devoted artist or to be an active member of the society helping to make it a better place. And while struggling to figure out where his priorities are he engages in constant struggle with his old fashioned father. The beauty of this plot is by pitching a classical singer in this struggle the writer got the character a perfect definition. A great artist is always sensible to the happenings around him and he always used his art to bring visibility to the pain and oppression and injustice surrounding him . And even if his art deserts him he or she will continue to be a pioneer and champion of service to people of his society and their contribution may not be in the form of art. That's pretty much what our hero does in this movie. When he is not singing manavasevaye dhrohama venting his frustration on his helplessness to save a life he goes around driving passed out drunkards to their homes, planting a gods idol outside the temple to help an extremely talented untouchable girl celebrate the god with her dance to educating people about the ill effects of alcoholism. Basically he questions "padhuguri saukhyam pondhey dhinamey panduga kaadha?" He lives by that and eventually he succeeds and all ends well. Not that this movie is perfect it has its flaws. Chiru's character is too righteous to digest and the whole plot is too noble to grasp and some scenes like roughing up the owners of legally run liquor shops to close down their business umm debatable. But with its few flaws the film still manages to strike a chord with every viewer because of its ambition to create this utopian society. A place where there are no locks to the houses , no police stations as there is no crime, a place where liquor is seen as a sin and the place where everyone wakes up every day to help others lead their lives properly. Since movie theatres are referred to as dream world in popular culture where movies are a dream, then rudraveena is that pleasant dream that lingers with u even when u wake up. Long before aamir khan with the help of velvet voice of mohit chauhan crooned "kuch kar guzar ne ko khoon chala khoon chala" it was chiru with the help of spb who sang "nenu saitham nenu saitham" to portray the same restlessness of a socially conscious leading man , but only chiru was more subtle, more believable ,more real in his role and with this movie he was able to capture the hearts of thinking audience of telugu cinema who used to ignore him before. Rudraveena for chiru fans is also a grim reminder of how the vast talents of an artist like chiru got wasted while falling to the trap of stardom and the responsibility of catering to masses. I still get goose bumps thinking about few scenes from this movie Papi gadu post este katthi la digali
