There is an audience in India as well - but unfortunately it is a niche market - like parallel cinema of the yore used to have...multiplexes should help revive that... That monologue from Shabana was beyond words- the writing, the execution, the lighting ...everything perfect..

irony is that people who can really appreciate and encourage such stuff are mostly in the west; and these folks will not get the subtleties that VB puts in his movies. aa shakespeare adaptations easy emo gaani, itlanti native movies kashtam. mana India lo nemo such stuff doesnt work. look at how many people declared it a flop already. she was just OK. vishal does not give lesser importance to his female characters. but it takes an actress a lot of stuff to stand out amidst such ensemble cast. Taboo in maqbool (pankaj kapoor's finest performance to date - probably better than kamal in nayakan) and kareena in omkara are examples of his strongly etched female characters. ee cinema lo focus shabana meedha ekkuvundhi, anushka is fine. balupu s/o gelupu | ||

I honestly dont think there's a better auteur in the country, than vishal. his hold over direction, music, script - is just mind boggling. I wish he acts in a full length role as well - will probably beat the shi* out of many actors. balupu s/o gelupu | ||

A classic by any stretch of imagination. Lovers of cinema should watch the movie just for the layers of subtext Vishal has woven into the narrative. It is said that we are all commies at some stage of our life - and this movie will bring that commie out of you once again. There's no event or philosophy (other than right wing, strangely) that Vishal does not parody. he has satire, sarcasm and sordid saga all laid down in perfect harmony. It takes some balls to take on the machinations of an SEZ head on the way vishal has done it. If someone were to remake it exactly for the SEZ scams that happened in AP, it would be an eye-opener. Pankaj kapoor - God level. whether acting as a drunk fool or a sober tyrant, unmatched. Shabana azmi - in general a low key routine performance. but there's one scene where she does a monologue of a typical desi neta. vishal's direction and her performance in this scene are shit scary. instant classic. irfan khan - struggled with comedy, but was good in the serious sequences. a couple of scenes stretch your patience but otherwise, a great watch. serious stuff. balupu s/o gelupu |
