a) Marriage What a sorry way to spend a holiday trip. Had to suffer the torture of attending a wedding of folks who probably felt that the band is more important than the Pujari. There was no mike for the pujari and the only mikes were with the horrible band who were intent on making us deaf. And when they were not playing, we did not even know what the Pujari was saying. It was like watching a silent movie. I had to go and request the pujari’s assistant to take the mike from the band, but he threw up his hands. I threw up my hands as I was not a key relative. If I closed my eyes, I did not know whether I was in a recording dance show or a wedding. Further, I do not understand why I am supposed to attend a wedding and see the photo/ videographer’s asses and only catch the movie on the TVs. Web streaming would have sufficed. Anyway – I walked out of the hall for the next 2 hours and spent it among a) Shopping at poranki Priya foods company showroom b) Relieving myself c) CCDB surfing d) Watching posters of family movie Prema Sallapam e) Throwing stones at stray dogs Key takeaways – if the bathroom to user ratio at the host’s house is 1:20, ensure that the drainage and exhaust systems work well. b) Food The less spoken about the food at these occasions, the better. 20 years nonchi okate routine – rumali roti, ulava charu, biryani, sambar, bendakaya fry. A couple of questions – asalu bendakaya or dondakaya fry items lo ee peanuts/ cashewnuts enduku vesthonnaru, entha kalam pedtharu. Sampesthonnaru…I have not attended one function, ever, where they served simple items like potato, beans, carrot…. Inspite of many years of attending weddings, the one meal I distinctly remember is one made my some temple Brahmin cooks in a small village for a cousin’s function. Mudda pappu, brinjal fry, dhappalam, bobbatlu… Just like earlier, it would be better to do a nice traditional meal than this eclectic mix trying to depict one’s nouveau riche tastelessness. On the flip side, I ate at some small restaurants that showed that the best tiffins are made in these small villages and towns. They load their pesarattus with onion, chillis, ginger and are liberal with their sambar, and when eaten in the early morning fog, the taste compensates for the previous nights lack of cultural and culinary flavour.
