Last week i passed through NV to CA....night time....around 8 to 9 .... Donner pass or something....heavy heavy vehicle traffic..... A Check point for all, vehicles are checked before the passage begins...i guess Car, heavy trucks chains are must and should.... SUV, AWD are Go....no stopping..... Passage lo 30 mph is the max speed limit, and this runs through for about 12-15 mins....once crossed..a point to remove chains....next trip antha bit serpentine roads which is a manageable drive...... Please make sure you take a All wheel SUV. Since you are not experienced with driving in snow its safe. With car you will need chains and driving with chains is different. Chains will cost another $80-$100 so get an SUV. Since this is first time I advice you start at 6 in morning so that you will be driving in light rather than in Dark. It will take a good 5 hrs..so plan accordingly..yesterday it snowed almost 14" so it will be a very good week in Tahoe. Bro its snowing heavy in Tahoe..You will need chains. Once you get your chains practice to put them in your home before your leave. you will need a torch light and some cardboard when putting and removing the chains..do practice before because its very tough when you have to do at night in the cold If possible take a SUV all wheel drive instead of full size car. for all wheel SUV you will not need chains. If this is the your first time driving in Snow i advise you not to drive you have 3-4 casinos in Tahoe it self no need to go to Reno. Heavenly is good you can take the Gondola ride ($35) to go to the ski resort and you can do tubing which is fun...you can also take a half day ski /snowboarding classes it will cost you around $80-$100 You can do dog sledging tours and also snow mobile tours.
