Nope, you misunderstood. I was mentioning the "allergies" part. at most, I ask if they are vegetarians, to make sure I have something they can eat. Saturday tiffins antaava, my parents fall under that category. In fact, if my wife is cooking, I always prefer tiffins at night, no rice. When I am eating out, I relax all my rules, everything (as in everything} goes. I try my best to eat only veggie stuff on Saturdays. In my circle most of the parties happen on Saturday nights. If I don't find anything veggie on the menu, I will eat the meats without making a fuss. They don't ask me if I am a vegetarian because they see me eat all the stuff all the while (including Chili etc). So, they don't even think about having veggie stuff. If u r one of those who never celebrate then its diff. But if u do celebrate for some occasions / mile stones (abt u, ur h_d kids etc) then u lose the right to ridicule others. I mean, u can still do it but that is pure hypocrisy When 4-6 weeks old smiles for the first time looking at you in the middle of the night, or when they call u mama, dada for the first time, or when turn around, or when they stand up / walk - these are life's most precious moments IMO. That reminds me of some of my friends here in US. Maa parties usually Saturday night avuthayi. Kontha mandhi aa roju non-veg tinaru. Apparently, they don't mind drinking because it is grape juice, barkey water etc. Moreover, as the party goes late, past mid-night they jump on left over chicken. Missed this thread all together. My take: Why not have parties like this? Ilanti party photos chooste, AP janalaki dressing-to-the-occasion telavadu (espacially men) anipistundi. Women are much better dressed usually to parties. As for the show off, let them spend as much as they can. It improves the economy as long as one doesn't need to barrow for false prestige. For someone like me, who visits India every couple of years, it is easier to meet friends/relatives on an occasion than visiting everyone separately. | ||

When people follow ritual for generations without questioning- it becomes just that- a pointless practice But there is reason behind all these abstinence practices - and no it is not because it pleases God... One thing that I can't fathom is the Saturday tiffins thing. I find that perennially irritating. Logic enti, health aa scriptures aa chadastham aa. Meals cheyakudadhu kani tiffins kummacha...am sure it is not scriptures, if so it would not be partially followed. If it is health, will one meal in a week not eating rice significantly change the course of things. So, by exclusion, it comes down to chadastham. Ee madya SS Baba bhakhtulu ekkuvayyi, thursday kooda tiffins anta, my mad... Marchipoya, saturday birthday parties ki oka sari my wife asked for an eggless cake as most invitees do not eat eggs on saturday. I shot that down. spot on.. last year india lo naa niece birthday party arrange chesetappudu pedda discussion rendu items chinese vundali ani - settled with gobi manchurian and chilli corn aa roju saturday kooda, we did not realize this and couple of oldies complained, we had to scramble and make the hotel fellow arrange upma/idli/dosa.. he did that as if we asked his kidney and charged the same way | ||

Either give me a cyanide pill or someone please amend the templates that have become of our birthday parties. A few bullet points from the standard birthday structure in AP: - Birthday baby has to be dressed in the most uncomfortable attire, nothing in sync with the weather or his age. Heavily embroidered dresses that keep itching him, a dose of jewellery to add to his irritation and above all a glaring video light to top the misery. - A disinterested guy in drooping shoulders, wearing a faded, unwashed Winnie Pooh or Mickey Mouse costume; one hand scratching his private parts and the other holding a baloon. The hands can alternate, so your kids be wary of the balloon-giving hand - Mandatory pouring of Akshinthalu on the bonny boy's head till it gets into his eyes and he starts choking on some swallowed rice grains. - Girls and aunties wearing Anarkali dresses, all the better for hiding the pear shaped Indian bodies (Aishwarya Rai, et tu) - If birthday is on a Saturday, then a tiffin counter so that people who do not eat rice or dinner on Saturday can hog 10 dosas or idlis which i just realised are also made of rice. - Cake with a Chota Bheem or Ben 10 overlay (or a Princess if it is a girl). a candle which sounds like a firecracker sending the kid bawling if the akshinthalu have not got to him as yet - The nod to the Chinese in all of us with the South Indian rendering of India's national dish - Gobi Manchurian - A mehndi and tattoo counter - nothing pleases the ladies more than a free mehndi - Guys, who rather not be there, not able to decide where to draw the satorial line between kurtas, t-shirts, and shirts and shoes and sandals.
