Jake_ryan:Is it too much to expect from 7 year old? I am not sure. How other kids are doing it?
not really. Dont worry about it. They will love reading once they feel confident that they can read. Thats why you need to help them in initial days. There is nothing more fun for them than reading books. |

Jake_ryan:
after she reads couple of lines. you stop her and ask a question. That way, she concentrates on understanding what she is reading. Kids are quick learners. Once they start learning it, they can go real fast |

Dma bro, reading is fine. She reads well. But what I see missing in her is comprehension and thinking about what she read. every day we try to read with her.. we do the same thing: bring dozen or so books at a time; let her pick what she is interested to read; and with pictures and all. But still she lacks comprehension skills. How to improve those skills is my question. Is it too much to expect from 7 year old? I am not sure. How other kids are doing it? |

Secondcup bro, thanks. Here, in sunnyvale school district, teachers themselves have the AR books. Kids need to take them home; read and take the test twice a week in teachers' room. Our kid is not concentrating much even though we ask her to take tests and succeed; she fails sometimes - fine with us.. but too much peer pressure here.. So we are not sure if we should worry or is there something that we as parents are not doing right.. even at 2.7 AR level, there are chapter books not sure how the kids are reading, understanding and ace'ing them left and right.. I learned some kids are taking three tests per week! (I am not kidding!!) |

Yup Also, bring home 2 dozens of books at a time. Library has books for each kids at their level. they have color codes, blue/yellow/orange etc etc. sit with kids and have them read 2 books a day. half book at a sitting. help them with new words |

How do you prepare your kids with AR testing? My kid is second grade, AR testing is big thing in her school. Are there any online tools available OR you sit with the kid and ask questions? But teacher says they need to give tests on two books per week. How do you manage? Thanks!! |
