Leadership change In 1947, the Congress presidency passed upon Jivatram Kripalani, a veteran Gandhian and ally of both Nehru and Patel. India's duumvirate expressed neutrality and full support to the elected winner of the 1947, 1948 and 1949 presidential races. However, a tug of war began between Nehru and his socialist wing, and Patel and Congress traditionalists broke out in 1950's race. Nehru lobbied intensely to oppose the candidacy of Purushottam Das Tandon, whom he perceived as a Hindu revivalist with "problematic" views on Hindu-Muslim relations. Nehru openly backed Kripalani to oppose Tandon, but neglected courtesy to Patel upon the question. With Patel's tacit support (especially in Patel's home state of Gujarat, where due to Patel's work, Kripalani received not one vote) Tandon won a tight contest, and Nehru threatened to resign. With Patel's convincing, Nehru did not quit. However, with Patel's death in 1950, the balance shifted permanently in Nehru's favor. Kripalani, C. Rajagopalachari and Tandon were marginalized, and the Congress Party's election fortunes began depending solely on Nehru's leadership and popularity. In a recent interview to The Hindu, Nayantara Sahgal pointed out that it was Indira Gandhi who created the âNehru-Gandhiâ dynasty, not her father. This is absolutely true. In a book published in 1960, the editor Frank Moraes (by that time a sharp critic of the Prime Minister) wrote - there is no question of Nehruâs attempting to create a dynasty of his own; it would be inconsistent with his character and career. When Nehru died in 1964, another bitter critic, D.F. Karaka, nonetheless praised Nehru's resolve - not to indicate any preference with regard to his successor. This was the privilege of those who were left behind. Nehru himself was not concerned with that issue. Living outside India, insulated in their daily lives from the consequences of the deeds or misdeeds of Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Sanjay Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, and Rahul Gandhi, both Nelson Mandela and Mikhail Gorbachev could appreciate the sagacity and moral depth of Nehruâs political vision. There was a survey - who is the greatest Indian after gandhi. Jury(historians, scholars,civil society) gave thier vote and the population of India also gave thier vote(through Internet) There was a huge discrepancy in the vote of the jury and the general population. Abdul Kalam, Rajanikanth and Sachin Tendulkar were not not even considered by the jury and they turned out to be very popular among the netizens of India - all getting more votes than nehru. Nehru, sadly,is a figure of disinterest and derision in India today, his reputation damaged in good part by the misdeeds of his genealogical successors. Ambedkar who did not even win a LS election in the 1950s is more popular among the Indians who surf the Internet than Jawarharlal Nehru.... Sardar Patel, who was Nehru's staunchest supporter and Shasthri who considered nehru as his Guru are more popular among the Internet generation of Indians than nehru himself.... Reason 1: Misdeeds of Nehru's family(for which he cannot and should not be blamed) Reason 2: Nehru's name does not fetch votes. Ambedkar's name fetches votes today. The BJP reading of history is tendentious, not least because Patel and Nehru were, in practice, collaborators and colleagues rather than rivals or adversaries. To be sure, they had their disagreements, but, to their everlasting credit, they submerged these differences in the greater task of national consolidation. Theirs was a willed, deliberate, division of labour and responsibilities.
