This is an ocean....so vast and so diverse.....sometimes contradictory also...evvaru nilabettakkarledhu..... The beauty is that the different texts written at different points of time actually evolve - from the supreme being - completely withdrawn and saying only Nature is permanent and cautioning us not to control nature (prakruti)to the later day texts telling us how to live to harmony with nature. And still later day books like ramayana tell us how to lead a successfull family life...and Mahabharatha about the larger society. So Shiva Purana lo oka line theesukoni (How to live life) - Mahabharatam lo same topic medha oka line theesukunte- the will appear contradictory - but the context and the purpose of these two texts is different. And hopefully people will understand - these are written by different people for different purposes - t different points of time. | ||

In North India - Dussera means rama Killing ravana and Deepavali means rama coming to Ayodhya... Naraka Chathurdasi is followed upto Gujarat and maybe some communities of Rajastan but not in the Hindi belt i.e. North India - UP, Bihar, haryana etc. | ||

That is because of the Cultural intermingling of the North Indian(Rajputs) and the Turks (Mughals,Lodhis etc). In Dravidian states the cultural intermingling was very limited PLUS the effect / impact of saints like ramanujacharya, Adi Sankaracharya and later day Annamacharya,Thyagaraja etc was there in Dravidin states and very little in the North. Adi Sankara had an effect - but then later the other cultures started pouring in. | ||

Completely Yes in Ap and Karnataka and to a certain extent in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. And those very same Sanskrit mantras are not recited at all in the temples in the plains of North India.(UP, Haryana, Bihar etc) Vhisnu Sahasranamam, Lalitha Sahasranamam,Devi Khadgamala etc etc ante chaala mandhi North Indians - have never heard of them in the pre Internet era. I studied in New Delhi in the Pre Internet era. Vinayaka Chavithi was not a festival there at all - and a large section of the people were ignorant of such a festival - only after Internet, Satellite TV and mass migration due to IT, Services etc, cultures started mingling. Ofcourse in the Pre Internet and Sattellite TV era, there was a mingling but to a limited extent only in cities like New delhi. Even today - Dussera ante Rama killing ravana ane hebuthaaru - not Mahishasura Mardhini. | ||

There never was a unified way of life in India. The customs were different. The gods were different. All of these started belonging to Hinduism to only from the last 200-300 years because of a lot of philosophers who unified the country based on some commanalities in the ways of life. Shaivasm, Vaishnavism etc were the religions. Anyway - it is good that the unifying force came and happenned. But then we also need to accpet the reality and not distort our actual SCIENCE. | ||
