every one should PREFER to have two. Once you set the mind set, every thing else will fall in place. if there is any reason (medical, age gap, etc.,) not to have two, do not need to worry much.. it all depends on how you are bringing them up. Even with one kid, he could have more well wishers in relatives or within friends and get un-conditional bonding with them. | ||

I don't know how people are relating Indian environment to USA environment. It's nice to have a boy and a girl, but given a decent education and upbringing, both can be financially successful here and the obstacles are hundreds less. If there are any barriers, both would face the same racial and ethnic ones. Somehow, I don't think heir or caretaker at old age tag will fit a son in future. It already doesn't, as many parents in India of NRIs live alone or in old age homes. Most people thing that 'obligation' to parents is a bad word.
