Q: How did Dhobi Ghat happen? What was the idea behind it? Rao: I actually set out to write something personal and had my own artistic voice in it, and it turned out to be this film. In fact, when I first came to Mumbai 15 years back, every time I shifted into a new apartment, I felt like the apartment told me the story of the previous tenants and their lives. Arun’s character (played by Aamir Khan in the film) is largely inspired by that. The stories are definitely drawn from my own life and experiences. It is also about various people I have un-consciously observed. Have you ever read a story with some random sentences, with characters having no causal relationship or heard a musical piece which doesn;t have a pattern? Have you ever watched a dance with no pattern in movements? If so do you ever conjure up a meaning out of these random non-patterned occurances? Only painting got an escape from pattern and people are calling it abstract when it doen;t make any sense? there is not much difference between kids' paintings and the so called modern painters except that we try to decipher some meaning out of modern painters while we dismiss kids' paintings. That said I don't think film making is random especially when it comes to story ....beauty of the art lies in patterns and structure and by and large randomness 99% of the time does not create art... It's one thing that a story is half-cooked with loose ends because the author doesn;t really know what to do and it's completely a different thing altogether to intentionally leave the meaning to audiences..the former is the case with Dhobi ghat's story... Unortho bro, Kadha pandu gaane migilindhi, right ee nemo, but does it have to eventually be a ripe fruit, to be a piece of work that can be enjoyed? quite possibly most expect a sense of completed or fulfilled story from a movie or in general a book. but to me this expectation need not be given too much priority from an artist's perspective. the expectation that a writer should decide what he wants to tell, or a movie maker should decide what he wants to potray or a painter should decide what he envisioned is more from a traditional art perspective. in my view all these works can be pieces of journey, not just from an artists perspective, but also from the viewers perspective. In my view, a movie does not need a story, a story is just one other flavor in the dish, may be it is the main ingredient in most, but it need not be an absolute essential ingredient to make a movie. abstractness in art is something that need not be done away with, and movie making need not be an exception to this. asalu movie tho story chepochu ani theliyaka mundhe a series of photographs ni movie ga release chese vaaru, and people were as much entralled by the experience of the movie, if you compare it with movies with stories. what story did to movie making was that it provided alot varieties, so essentially newer flavors were being created, with newer stories. now to say that flavor is absolutely needed, i dont agree. the world of appearances may or may not be real, or both may and may not be real - or may be indescribable; or may be real and indescribable, or unreal and indescribable; or in the end may be read and unreal and indescribable - its all Syadvada | ||
