true! but I would readily trade the olympic Gold for a Grandslam - especially wimbledon, without missing a beat!

also, fed has a doubles gold, so i dont see the singles gold as a big deal. besides, even if fed wins, there is already a swiss player who already won a men's singles olympic gold. marc rosset won the singles gold in 92 barcelona!

i see where you are coming from, though. i am hoping fed wins uso 12 and follows it up with AO 13 instead of olympics gold and USO wins.

professionals - play for money. most sportsmen come under this title nowadays, but till the close of last millenium -88 seoul or 92 barcelona, olympics was meant for athletes sponsored by their countries. tennis and i guess basketball and other such mostly pro-dominated sports were introduced around that time. they were not part of the olympics before.

track & field and swimming and other athletes mostly get paid by their country [even now in most countries]. super popular athletes like phelps & bolt have their own sponsorships and all, but most average joes in most sports in olympics is sponsored by his own country!

tennis was an amateur sport till 1968. in 69, tennis went OPEN or turned professional. throughout the 60s, top tennis players like laver and rosewall actually didn't play the majors because they were not OPEN to professional players. they played on a rival tour called the pro-tour!

cricket - though the cricket boards use their country's name, all of them are not under their respective governments but under organizations like BCCI or cricket australia and so on. In that sense, cricket has been a non-amateur sport for ages! however, in the last few years you can think of test-cricket as an "amateur" version with t-20/ODIs being the pro-version.

Ipc302:

.waiting for olympics

Olympics pichha lite. Olympics, as far as tennis is concerned, is totally against the spirit of sport! Olympics is to celebrate the spirit of "amateur sport". Tennis is the most selfish sport out there. ATP = association of tennis professionals!

So mixing those 2 is like adding water to oil - just doesn't go well. If my stats are right, in the past 6 olympics, take a look at the top 2 men's medalists and rafa nadal is the only top 5 player to get a gold/silver! It is a really arbitrary tournament, as far as tennis is concerned!

Even if fed wins like 10 olympic golds, they will never equal even 1 gold medal of usain bolt's or michael phelps'

incidentally, bolt/phelps compare favorably with fed where domination is concerned, but fed's artistry gives him a miniscule of edge over these 2 fellow-freaks of nature

For me, he is. I have never seen any sportsman mix wizardry, brilliance, majesty, elegance, X-lens, Y-lens, and produce results as lethal as Federer does. He is just one of a kind athlete.

This wimbledon win came at the right time...it will push him further for more GS wins...waiting for olympics and the US open season

Fed lost the match from 2 sets to 0 up :D

to be fair, fed was playing his 3rd 5 setter match in 3days. this was the 2nd last match fed lost to hewitt. after this match, it took hewitt almost 7years to get his next win over fed. in the mean time fed beat hewitt 15times in a row.

In the year following this davis cup match, fed beat hewitt 5 times the next year [2004]. and in 4 of those matches fed bageled hewitt, including a double bagel in the USopen 2004 final. That is the most perfect tennis I have seen any player play. Federer was in such screaming form and his level of play was so outstanding that I am positive he would have double bageled most of the tennis greats anyone can think of!

Federer has been universally acclaimed the lord of the tennis universe after his recent Wimbledon. Most sports analysts are debating if Fed is the Greatest Sportsman of all time - you know compared to Ali, pele, jordan, phelps and the likes.

For me, he is. I have never seen any sportsman mix wizardry, brilliance, majesty, elegance, X-lens, Y-lens, and produce results as lethal as Federer does. He is just one of a kind athlete.

To quote my most favorite quote about RF, "God made Roger Federer". The tennis universe bows to the God of Tennis!

ivaltitho 287 weeks at No 1...sampras's 286 weeks record out...

Sampras says "the hardest thing to do in sports is the ability to stay on top. Roger has been able to do so by great play and durability."
