Times Of India today's article. VIJAYAWADA: Nellore YSR Congress MP-elect Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy's victory margin has rattled both the ruling Congress and opposition TDP camps. Mekapati trounced the cash-rich senior Congress leader Tikkvarapu Subbarami Reddy with a whopping margin of over 2.91 lakh votes, the highest in the history of Nellore Lok Sabha. Though YSR CP chief Jaganmohan Reddy set a record with a victory margin of over five lakh votes in Kadapa, Mekapati's win by a huge margin has left the TDP and Congress aspirants sleepless. At this rate Congress and TDP leaders fear that the YSR CP might sweep the next LS elections, particularly in Seemandhra region. While a few Congress candidates won the 2009 election with a good margin of over 1 lakh-1.5 lakh votes over their rivals, at least 11 MPs had scraped through with wafer-thin majorities. "Although it is not possible to alter the swing even in the small assembly segments when the wave is clearly one-sided, at times local factors could help change the fate of MLA candidates. But it is not possible for MP candidates," analysed a former MP. He said that this was one reason for the Congress winning 33 MP seats in the last elections despite losing assembly seats. "Local factors make or mar an MLA's prospects while larger national issues and image of a top leader would sway the voters in the LS elections even if both the elections are held simultaneously," pointed out LSN Prasad, economics professor. Industrialist-turned-politician Modugula Venugopala Reddy of TDP won Narasaraopet LS seat with a negligible majority of 1,600 votes. Congress party's Undavalli Arunkumar won the election with 2,147 votes in Rajahmundry. He trailed in six assembly segments, but emerged victorious as Reddy-dominant Anaparthi backed him. Even the mercurial Lagadapati Rajagopal was made to sweat for his win over a novice like Vallabhaneni Vamsi of TDP in Vijayawada. "A majority of below 3,000-4,000 for assembly segment and below 20,000 for LS seat is considered bothersome and only in rare cases those who win with such majorities are likely to get re-elected in the subsequent elections," observed Anjaiah, reader at Acharya Nagarjuna University. Curiously, there are very few MPs who got more than 50,000-vote majority in the last elections and are anxious with the way Mekapati had swept the Nellore LS election. In Kovur segment, local MLA Prasanna earned a 22,000-vote majority a few months ago. Mekapati's majority swelled to 56,000 from this segment alone in the just concluded byelection for the LS seat, a clear indication of the growing influence of Jagan among a cross section of the society. While Chiranjeevi's PRP cut into TDP vote-bank helping Congress nominees win the elections in 2004, Jagan's party is virtually splitting the vote-banks of both the Congress and TDP as its vote share has surged to 46% against the TDP's 23% and Congress party's 22%. Not only in Seemandhra, the YSR CP is likely to consolidate its strength even in Telangana region given the way its nominee Konda Surekha fought at Parkal and bagged a sizeable vote share. The victory margins of Union minister S Jaipal Reddy, TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao and its star leader Vijayashanti were very low last time around and analysts believe some of the MPs who had hard-fought wins would be the first victims if the YSR CP continues the tempo. | ||
