" On hard court he does come forward at times. " you could say the same for nadal and he surely is not a 1st strike player. delpo hangs too far behind the baseline for far too much time to be called an aggressive player. the whole point of power is to harness it and use it to your advantage. if you bash the ball and hang back and dont move in, you are giving your opponent a lot of power to work with and a lot of room to maneuver that power with. that means you are extending the rally and not trying to finish it. such power bashing is useless if you do not have the forward transition and the net game to cut the rallies short. even the most strongest guy in this world will break down if he has to keep bashing the ball a 100 times each match, which is what delpotro does. if he uses tennis smarts like fed/djokovic he would move forward and reduce the number of power bashing to 50times or so which is more kind on the body. as for davydenko, the guy used to be a tennis machine till 2 years back when he started getting injuries, he had spent 4-5 years of full throttle tennis before injuries got him. that is par for the course. nalbandian looks as fit as a pregnant lady! he always has a beer paunch and with a physique like that you will get injured when you play international sport. the more reasonable players are federer/djokovic who have rarely been out with injuries over the last 5-6 years. djokovic has allergies and illness, but never injuries. and fed has some wear and tear, but with 1000+ matches, that is to be expected. they always try to hang around the baseline and rarely let go of it, often hitting the ball on the rise - something delpotro does very minimally. and they are always looking to move forward in the rally. ofcourse, they may not succeed when the opponent holds his own like delpotro did to fed in the 1st 2 sets, but they do not get involved in mindless ball bashing. they strike the ball with a purpose to take control of the rally and end the point - and the best way to do it on a tennis court is @ the net. if you are finishing most points from the baseline like nadal/delpotro, you are pretty much asking for injuries. IPC @ 326: Fed has a great chance @ number 1 and another GS. the biggest thing he has going for him is his $exy silky smooth game which is super efficient. he has to just keep knocking and eventually he can break the door open. his best chances will be wimbledon/USO as they are the faster slams. unfortunately, they have made the balls heavier and that as made it harder for him, but he will definitely get a shot at couple more wimby/uso. I am guessing he will end with 18 slams. he plans on playing for 5-6 years more and if his body continues to hold up, even more. tennis players beyond 28 cannot win slams regularly, but if fed can keep at it, he can prove to be an exception like agassi, connors and ken rosewall (way back in the 60s). as they say, it is all gravy for fed from here on. he's had a spectacular career and his tennis is the most brilliant and majestically elegant brand of tennis ever seen in this universe. ( i know i got a lot of hyperbole in there, but mr. federer inspires people to push the limits of these adjectives!) What the executioner did after he was done with his job. (4,6) | ||

Delpo is not at all a defensive player. He attacks the ball from the 1st strike. he doesn't like playing lengthy rallies. the only drawback is, he attacks from the baseline doesn't like coming forward especially on clay. On hard court he does come forward at times. FED is playing decently enough to beat any other player but he is way behind the Top2 players in terms of mental strength...Djoker looks like he cannot be stopped even when the odds are a million to 1 against him...the only reason to back Rafa for FO is simpley because He is king of clay.... i would hate to see djoker not get a chance against Rafa on clay....Both are in their prime and given Fed's weakness against rafa on clay, better djoker vs rafa....But being KING's fan i wanna see one more GS title to his name | ||

fed got lucky? LOL! that's like saying Newton/Einstein got lucky with all their theories. it is not like delpo got his injury while he was hiking or skiing. this guy has got a legit tennis related injury because of the brutal way HE CHOOSES to play. fed is 7+ years older than delpotro - if anyone should have injuries, it should be fed who is a grandaddy in tennis terms. fed reaps the benifits oh his super-smooth offensive play combined with his cat-like smartness on the tennis court. he has played 50 consecutive Grandslam tournaments! and is just 6 tournaments off the all-time record. he has never ever retired mid-way in a match. he has conceded only 2 walk-overs in his 1000+ matches old career. delpotro has about 10 retirements already and dude keeps moving from injury to injury. i feel sad for him, but it is NOT due to bad luck that he gets injured. if you are going to play a running-defensive game with a 6-6 frame 200+ lbs, you are begging to be injured. i sympathize more with tsonga, who is similarly built but ALWAYS plays aggressively. his injuries are unlucky because tennis has slowed down conditions in the last decade and attacking big men like him are forced to push their bodies more to fight against these uber-defensive top players who are aided by slower conditions. i hope delpo gets a good talk and changes his approach to tennis. he has got great game, bue he needs to serve bigger and always look to move forward. hanging at the baseline is for lesser mortals. the gifted players move-in for the kill. think about brazil-italy in football or australia-south africa in cricket between 98-08. italy and south africa are great, but brazil and aussies are just special! they elevate sport to an art form. they lift it from base emotions like competitiveness to aesthetic emotions filled with joy. super exciting day of tennis. nole has become a houdini this FO. he remains on track to achieve the holy grail of tennis - the GRAND SLAM! to do that he will have to do something equally hard - get through 2 of the top 3 players to have ever played the game and also 2 of the top 3 players ever on clay. federer was real lucky to escape delpo's big hitting, but as they say, injuries are part of the sport. jmdp will always have to contend with injuries given how physical his game is. that is the price you pay if you donot have enough tennis smarts to understand your strengths and hone them. for a guy who is 6-6, he plays way too much defense. if only tennis coaches could teach the advantages of playing offensive tennis. federer and sampras - 2 of the least injured players of all time are the top 2 winningest players of all time in tennis. there is also another similarity - they play 1st strike tennis! they are hunting down their prey rather than sit and watch it come down to them. i love delpo's game, but it baffles me that his best shot is not his serve/volley. it even makes me sad - all the more so when i see him battle injuries. coming to tsonga, he is one big guy who hits serve well, but he surely can do better when it comes to placing it and the 2nd serve. neither would have helped him today though. he faced the same hurdle fed faces against nadal - you are on a surface that favors your opponent much more than you. tsonga almost got the job done, but he just couldn't wrap it up. and against nole, that is asking for trouble. i like djokovic lesser than fedal, but the last 18 months the dude has whipped up a storm. we could witness something both fed and nadal failed to achieve and no one with only 1 x and 1 ychromosome has achieved since 1969 - a GRAND SLAM. this will give nole a nole slam and put him on track for an even greater achievement - the calendar GRAND SLAM and maybe even a calendar GOLDEN GRAND SLAM. is the force with mr. djokovic? we will know within a week! the onus is on fedal to stop djokovic and make their legacies a little safer from the serbian shot-maker! as for the women's, maria looks good for a career grand slam. though kvitova, and sara errani and stosur will want to have something to say about that.
