in the sense that beauty is a perception like you have said,and we humans have the cognitive ability to answer the question even when we are not in a physical or emotional need of the object we like. but in case of a peacock it is entirely in the moment, and more than likely he wont remember the most beautiful thing he ever saw, after his need for the period has completed. its instinctive and it is restrictive. we humans might say the most beautiful thing I saw is a peacock, though we are not in front of it.

Agree with that and also the human analogy That is nature at work - the need to procreate...and there the parallel ends between animals and humans ends w.r.t beauty ...Humans see beauty in everything around them , not just in prospective mates - and this is a learned behaviour.. an planned organized garden is unnatural but deemed beautiful by people trained to like neat lines and boundaries
True - but I attribute that to the fixed gender roles - women struggled with body images and men with their fiscal images... Now with the roles changing somewhat and with the ratios changing you see men undergoing the same angst over body image And I see the new order happening already - atleast in the workplace - where women have built their own identity beyond the traditional role - they are way more comfortable defying the old norm of dressing and carriage to suit their comfort AS I mentioned in my first post, there was a time when I wondered aloud why girls walk around as walking feeder stations for goats But I submitted to elders telling me to wear bindi, bangles, flowers,earrings, etc ...over time got used to it and even started to enjoy pulling things together and still do so though the need is gone the habit persists As to the last point ,if a scorned lover of any gender tars every woman/man with the same brush - he/she will be pecked and rightfully so - looking for sympathy by berating half of humanity is not going to work WOw - that was a long post - and I rambled all over - but you should be used to that by now The foolish man seeks happiness in the distance; the wise grows it under his feet : James Oppenheim | ||

when the beauty is just another perceptional quality, then why limiting that perception with in the humans only? peacock with his colorful plumage and with his boastful pose, looks beatiful for humans! where as a peahen looks dull with her dull colors and no plummage! If some one asks that peacock about the most beautiful thing in this world, most likely he would point out that peahen! if we found another peacock and requested him about his opinion on the first peacock's beauty, he would probaly says, "all that is not beauty but showing intimidation and hidden cruelty to catch the attention of that peahen and to drove off other peacocks!" if some one, an outsider has been watching the human evolution and their socity building since a long time and we asked him the same question, then he would probably say, "men are beautiful!" "with their huge build, hair all over body, mane, deep voice, display of dominance and capacity to manipulate!" where as every man says woman are beautiful, even though women are one third less in the build, having a hour glass shape and have a shrieking voice! surprisingly women also accepted this man's view about the beauty. instead of building a new order and new perceptions, they are just happy with their submission in the hands of man. only thing they are capable of doing is collectively pecking a scorned lover, mistaking him for a misogynist! | ||

True... but Beauty is cultural too - what may be considered a sign of beauty in one culture may be deemed ugly in another And once people divide things in their head into beutiful/pleasant Vs ugly/unpleasant - they prefer to keep their environment pleasant As many stated here adorned females and preening males have evolutionary roots, and people are conditioned into their cultural definition of "desirable" male and female characteristics... The interesting question is when and why did that equation reverse - because in the animal kingdom , it is the male which is more ornately adorned - from Lions to Peacocks Was it driven by changing sex-ratio ?
