Business Man defies all conventional wisdom. Gone are the days of the central character being always politically correct. He talks and behaves like a shrewd business man albeit in a questionable field. At a little of over two hours the movie is short by Telugu standards. Mostly it runs like a French TGV and strangely you yearn for the songs to come in and give you some breathing space. In the first half, there are only two such breathers and the first one takes a long time to come on to the screen. The pace falters a little in the second half though. There are some absolutely delightful sequences in the movie along with some insanely stupid illogical sequences that is hard to digest. The second half actually runs like a fairy tale and is as realistic and believable as the Harry Potter movie. Granted, the movie is not for the intelligentsia but even the masses would probably feel the same way about the movie. Cinematic liberty fails to shield some of those gaping holes. Having said that, most of that negative feeling is overcome by one of the finest writings on Telugu celluloid you have ever seen. Puri Jagannadh gets most of the lines right. Almost all the lines spoken by the leading man are clap-worthy. The movie deserves a watch just for those awesome lines. And to deliver them in the best manner possible, Mahesh Babu gets into the skin of the character so effortlessly that you start to suspect Surya Bhai is the real Mahesh Babu. He obviously had quite a bit of fun playing Surya Bhai because it shows clearly on the screen. This is by far the best performance by Mahesh on the silver screen. He has given it all. It is a treat to watch him in this movie. His fans must be a happy lot - an extremely satisfied happy lot I mean. Kajal plays a beaten to death cliché ridden Telugu Cinema Heroine role. Again, it was Mahesh and Puri's smart writing that saves the day for the beautiful lass. She is adequate in that role - albeit completely overshadowed by the handsome hunk romancing her. The much hyped kiss is again a blink-and-you-miss-it two second feature that does not warrant any attention. Apart from this, the pair enjoys a fairly good amount of chemistry on screen. The rest of the cast does their job with aplomb. Puri Jagannadh and Mahesh must be commended for the way they ended the movie without bringing in unnecessary twists in the tale to make the character politically - well, correct! The movie has a fair share of profanities - masked by beeps but clearly understandable- that might upset some of the conservative audience. There are no disconnected comedy tracks in the movie and thankfully no "families" whatsoever. But the narration has liberal humor elements - thanks to Puri's writing. All in all, a pretty enjoyable and totally entertaining watch if you can accept those illogical sequences. dEvO mahEsh roopENa: Superstar Mahesh Rocks! |
