that's pretty good. but he talked as if he was tagging along his wife and kids with him between US and India as his moods changed. i like his sentiment about the maid eating in the same plates. at least he tried to break the norm but gave in eventually. how many of us have that kind of sensibility ?
if hygiene is our complaint, why would we want them to be cleaning our dishes in the first place

Ranjit from Calcutta
I understand and respect the views of the author here.

However, I have strong objections to 'they're all liars'. Or with the overall sense the article has against the human dignity of the poor people (hygiene standards of poor maid).

Early in my academic life, I learnt how not to make categorical statements. The author has kept no escape route. There are ample stories in Indian or global media on how a poor taxi driver returns thousands of dollars/assets. I myself have a driver who is very ethical in his standards. I am not sure that facing same need of money as he does, I would have been able to maintain same ethical standards.

One must have a human understanding of the unethical practices of the needy.

I am even little surprised that NYT publishing standards didn't find anything objectionable to 'they’re all liars' comment in above blog.

There are times, when, even I thought of leaving India. However, it was never for the dishonesty of the poor or needy. It is an irony and against developed-nations spirit of exploitation of cheap-labor that rich/middle-class in India enjoy a lifestyle of maid, personal drivers here due to cheap labor. My thinking of leaving India, at times, originates from the overall lack of ethics in the upper 10% of Indian society.

In one way, I get a feeling that this article supports the moral deficit of those 10%, without basic empathy for the needy and the poor.

Sorry if my interpretation of article is all wrong
