Unlike his reel-life court scenes that had a happy ending, film actor Balakrishna's first ever real-life court experience turned out to be somewhat disappointing for him. Turning down Balakrishna's request that he be allowed to stay at Care Hospital on medical grounds, the Fifth Metropolitan Magistrate of Criminal Courts, M. Gandhi, on Monday remanded him to judicial custody till June 21 before directing the authorities to shift him to the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) for treatment. Accordingly, Balakrishna, who was produced before the court this morning, was shifted to the NIMS even as a handful of fans raised slogans pledging support to him and wishing for his `early acquittal.' After hearing the prosecution and defence, the Magistrate said, "Balakrishna garu, we're sending you to NIMS for further treatment. You'll be sent to Care Hospital if the NIMS doctors opine that you require expert treatment. But, you'll be sent to jail once the doctors confirm you're physically fit." The NIIMS Director, Kakarla Subba Rao, said Balakrishna was suffering from depression and anti-depressant drugs had been given to him. A panel of six doctors that examined the film star said his blood pressure was fluctuating. He complained of pain in his ankle. As per the old records of Care Hospital, there was evidence of blood clots. But, tests conducted on Monday showed all the clots had been dissolved. Balakrishna was wheeled into the court at 10.43 a.m. When the Magistrate asked if the film star wanted to say anything, the latter replied that he was not in a position to talk. On request, the court permitted Balakrishna to `talk' with his counsel `separately' on the court premises for about 10 minutes. The Jubilee Hills police were caught off guard when the Magistrate asked for production of the `case diary.' When the Magistrate said he could not pass an order by examining just a `remand report,' an apparently embarrassed Jubilee Hills Inspector, Vijay Kumar, hurriedly directed his subordinates to get the file and produced the same after a few minutes. An intense argument ensued with defence counsel, K. Ravinder Kumar, praying to allow his client to be kept at Care Hospital and the public prosecutor, K. Chandrashekhar, vehemently opposing the same. "Sir, the Pratyusha case has shown what is that hospital's credibility," said the PP presenting his argument. "In that case, the credibility of the police shall be questioned because they haven't brought even the case diary to the court in this case," retorted the defence lawyer. When the Magistrate asked the prosecution as to why they were insisting Balakrishna's examination by Government doctors, the PP said the police did not want to allow the accused to take advantage of a possible `favourable medical opinion' from the Care Hospital. "Sir, I request not to subject my client to experiments at this stage," Mr. Kumar pleaded. Pat came reply from Mr. Chandrashekhar, "Sir, sending for examination is not an experiment." The Magistrate made it clear to Balakrishna that the expenditure for treatment at the NIMS shall be borne by him. | ||
