Consider this. You have the hottest looking guy in front of the camera and a clockwork-like planner behind it. Both are stalwarts in their respective divisions. And they are working towards realizing a common dream. What is the first thought that comes to your mind now? Clash of priorities? Conflicts of interest? The setting aforementioned has every potential go awry because the hero wants his image to be intact. The director wants his signature to be visible. While one is known for his action scenes, the other is hailed for his deft handling of humor. There have been similar settings in the recent past and the end result has not been something that either party liked. So it is easy to write off this combination as a sure shot recipe for disaster. It is like a razor sharp knife edge. One wrong move and you are shredded to pieces. When the end credits of Dookudu roll up, you realize that the team has done a nice balancing act on the knife edge all the way from start to finish. Yes, some feet are cut and there is blood dripping but everyone is in one piece and with a big smile on the face. So are you, the ultimate judge of the stuff unraveling on the screen - content and smiling - that your investment of time, money and effort has not been wasted. Most big movies these days have only one name associated with them. It is either the hero or the heroine or in some cases the director. In this case, it is both the hero and the director. Dookudu is neither a Mahesh Babu movie nor a Srinu Vaitla movie. It is just a darn good entertainer. While you see shades of brilliance from the director in one scene, you see that the hero walks away with all the laurels in the immediate scene. This movie has no place for a heroine because she does not have a role in the main theme of the movie. Yet, thanks to the requirements of the market - there has to be a love interest for the hero and subsequently six songs including the obligatory item song. So Samantha frowns, laughs, smiles, acts stupid as is customary in Telugu Cinema, gyrates to some really pedestrian music from S S Thaman and somehow still manages to win quite some hearts. Songs, thought well shot, act as speed breakers in what would otherwise have been a great movie. But then, how many great movies succeed at the box office these days? So what is the story? In one sentence, the movie is all about a wronged man taking revenge on the bad guys while protecting his father trapped in an imaginary world. How does it all happen? Srinu Vaitla answers this question deftly. You can see his trademark scenes every now and then (interlaced with you-guessed-it, trademark scenes of Mahesh Babu). There is this troupe of comedians found in every Vaitla movie and they do deliver a bag of gags. There is M S Narayana in a highly overrated imitation humor that fails to tickle the funny bone. Brahmanandam, for some reason, seems to reserve his best for Srinu Vaitla. He is the pick of the lot as far as comedians go. Though not his best Vaitla characterization by any stretch of imagination, he is entertaining in his own way. But the man who makes you laugh the most is neither of these two. It is the leading man again. Mahesh Babu, who has already shown us what he is capable of in Khaleja, is simply in his elements here. The fact that he is enjoying the role to the hilt is evident from the energy he brings to the table. Quite frankly however, Mahesh does not have much of a scope in this movie for proving his acting prowess. Most of the impact is generated by clever writing, kickass cinematography and adept editing. However it is still good to see the remarkable ease with which he carries out really challenging scenes. Khaleja had more Mahesh than this movie. The bad guys sleepwalk through the movie. Sonu Sood is becoming repetitive these days. So is Kota in a blink-miss role. The movie suffers from the classic problem. Larger than life characterization of the bad guys does not justify their stupidity in the later parts of the movie. It is high time we brought in some intelligent villains having an IQ of more than twenty six. Prakash Raj is at ease in a role inspired by the late PJR. Nazar is wasted in a one dimensional role. What is Dookudu all about? Mahesh and Srinu Vaitla. Everyone else has a two bit role. These two stalwarts manage to lift the movie from being just another ordinary flick to an energetic action entertainer. The movie has all the ingredients to strike gold at the box office. Watch it for Mahesh and Srinu Vaitla. And before I conclude this, the movie pays a fitting tribute to NTR and Krishna, mentions Nagarjuna in more than one occasion and has Nagendra Babu in a twenty second role.
