argument bagundhi kani not true.... they never gifted any thing to world, thay wanted to make use of thier free source to create market for rest of their product... example ga IE ni teesukonte because of IE only PC reached every house in return micro soft got royalty on their OS.....

what is the money spent on creating IE & developing it VS benefit they got out of it ????

marketing skills is what made us corporations grow big, giving a few doses of dope is not charity

this is where I philosophically differ from you - you seem to make the corporations responsible for migration of jobs and markets outside. I do not blame them.

For the simple reason - money finds the value. like water flows from high to low, money flows from low return to high return. the job of a corporate leader is to maximize the return on capital. so, you cannot find fault with them.

Instead of viewing China and India as Frankensteins, we must see them as valuable markets. If it's not China/India, it would be Ireland, Philippines or whatever. As long as the economic disparity of countries exist, wage disparity also exist. so, the jobs would move somewhere.

But the American corporations are guilty of one thing - wasting of shareholders capital. Especially in IT. Companies like Sun Micro Systems had no right to use Shareholders' money to create a product like Java and give it free. That killed them. Similarly, MSFT has no right to create a product called IE and give it free. That killed them half. Rest of the world are the beneficiaries of enormous advances of Science and Technology at the expense of US Company shareholders. That costed the American economy dearly. technology is a double edged sword. while it improved the productivity in USA, it made the external workforces more competitive and robbed the real wages from the US middle class.

It's not the greedy corporations that killed american jobs. It's the free technology the US created and gifted to the world.

China opened its market in 1978....Here are the results of exporting of the manufacturing jobs....

China’s vehicle ownership climbed to 51 million by the end of 2008 from 1 million in 1977. Per capital disposable income for Chinese households increased 46-fold in nominal terms during the period, also making the country the world’s biggest markets for products such as cell phones, beer and microwave ovens

. So, if US does not wake up and realize this, the power will shift permanently

That changes has already happened....The Corporation's have created two Frankensteins....A manufacturing based Frankenstein called China and a Services based Frankenstein called India....which in turn have expanded the middle class at the expense of US....So....the power change has already happened in front of our eyes....very few people realized it....

Case and Point....China became the world's largest car market in 2009.....stealing the crown from US

well, I know very little sociology, so, could not add any insight.

At the beginning of the last century, Briton was the Super Power. by 1940, the power shifted to the US. the driver for that change was the growing size of the American markets and the emerging middle class of America.

We might be seeing a similar shift now - the emerging and bigger markets are now outside the USA. The growing middle class is also outside the USA, in the form of China and India. So, if US does not wake up and realize this, the power will shift permanently.

Now what can be done?

Most of the latter half of last century, America spent time policing the World - first to safeguard itself, then its value system, then its allies, and then finally again safeguarding itself. This is an enormous cost. It has to accomplish this in a less expensive model, by divesting some power structures and co opting power-sharers.

Then increase the market size at home. It's called immigration. Bad politics, but good economics. Open the doors to well qualified students and professionals and bring back as many jobs as possible.

Then, make better politics. Most of the Presidents' time is spent in politicking. Just nothing gets done. They start dreaming about an elephant. Finally end up having a squirrel. The most powerful nation in the world has the most tedious political process.

My take on Caterpillar....

It is matter of time, Caterpillar becomes also ran and eventually close its manufacturing in US...Illinois will suffer and so does the Country's shrinking manufacturing base

Today's article in Chicago Tribune about Caterpillar CEO about lack of skilled workers in US(Code word for shipping jobs out of US)

Caterpillar CEO: We can't find enough skilled workers

Mon Sep 12 2011 6:36 AM

Caterpillar Inc. is struggling to add skilled workers in its manufacturing operations despite high U.S. unemployment levels that have forced President Barack Obama to take extraordinary measures, the company's chief executive said.

The dichotomy in the makeup of the workforce is threatening U.S. and Canadian competitiveness, Caterpillar CEO Doug Oberhelman said.

The other day we had an interesting discussion about the economy....My argument was that the middle class is declining because of corporation's greed in search of lower costs which in turn is causing fundamental changes in US middle class habits...The middle class is becoming poorer day by day....

This is today's Wall Street Journal article ....but posted in this website

For generations, Procter & Gamble Co. growth strategy was focused on developing household staples for the vast American middle class.

Now, P&G executives say many of its former middle-market shoppers are trading down to lower-priced goods—widening the pools of have and have-not consumers at the expense of the middle.

That forced P&G, which estimates it has at least one product in 98% of American households, to fundamentally change the way it develops and sells its goods. For the first time in 38 years, for example, the company launched a new dish soap in the U.S. at a bargain price.

It’s required us to think differently about our product portfolio and how to please the high-end and lower-end markets, says Melanie Healey, group president of P&G’s North America business. That’s frankly where a lot of the growth is happening.

In the wake of the worst recession in 50 years, there’s little doubt that the American middle class—the 40% of households with annual incomes between $50,000 and $140,000 a year—is in distress. Even before the recession, incomes of American middle-class families weren’t keeping up with inflation, especially with the rising costs of what are considered the essential ingredients of middle-class life—college education, health care and housing. In 2009, the income of the median family, the one smack in the middle of the middle, was lower, adjusted for inflation, than in 1998, the Census Bureau says.
