The Telegraph understands that this summer’s tour by India, the global power of world cricket, will earn the England and Wales Cricket Board significant returns from their overseas broadcast deal with ESPN. In 2007, the ECB signed a rights deal with the broadcaster in the region of £40 million. A large slice, 45 per cent, is linked directly to the tour by India, a cheque which will arrive at a time when the county game needs a financial boost. When sponsorship and ticketing sales from the four Tests, five one-day internationals and a Twenty20 match are added, the visit by India will make 2011 the most lucrative in the history of English cricket. The windfall will enable the board to increase the annual dividend for the counties from its current £1.5million, providing a glimmer of good news for a domestic game that has been beset with financial problems during the economic downturn. Only three counties returned a profit last year and the picture was particularly gloomy at Test match grounds. Lancashire lost a record £2 million and Yorkshire £1.4 million. Reality is hitting home for the 2011 season. Lancashire have their smallest squad since the war and at Yorkshire eight staff were made redundant during the winter, with the rest taking a one per cent pay cut. The Yorkshire players also had to partly fund a pre-season trip to the Caribbean themselves and the county cannot afford an overseas player this season. The Indian tour will provide some relief with ESPN paying a large fee for overseas broadcast rights this summer as part of its four-year deal with the ECB. It will help to prop up county finances as the game prepares for a difficult 2012, when officials are warning that the London Olympics will hit cricket’s corporate income. The money underlines the power of Indian cricket and the reason why boards are keen to play as many matches as possible against the recently crowned world champions and the No1-ranked Test side. To maximise income, over the next 18 months England will cram in 27 matches against India in all forms of cricket, touring the country twice. In November, England will travel to India for a five-match one-day series and next year will undertake their biggest tour to the country for a generation, playing four Tests, seven one-day internationals and a Twenty20 match. Interest is high in this summer’s action and on a par with an Ashes series. Lord’s is already sold out for four days of the first Test and Surrey have reported 80 per cent capacity already for the first three days of the fourth Test. The one-day international against India at the Kia Oval on Sept 9 sold out before Christmas. However, most of the ticket revenue and match sponsorship would be kept by the individual grounds. “Perhaps we are now seeing the Ashes is not the only iconic series and Test series against India are taking their place at that table,” said Richard Gould, the Surrey chief executive. “Every Test series is important but perhaps now we are going to have a major event every two years rather than every four.” The money made from such trips will filter down to the county game in increased payments form the centre. This summer an extra £200,000-300,000, on top of the annual dividend, will be paid to category C county grounds, those below international level, who have completed significant upgrades to facilities. The India series coincides with a concerted effort by the board to help counties properly manage their businesses. In January the ECB appointed Gordon Hollins to a newly created position as managing director of county cricket and is the first ECB director with direct responsibility for the running of county finances. His job is to provide long term solutions. Four years ago Kent were forced to sell a 100-year-old painting to rake in £600,000 but such moves provide only short-term relief and Hollins is working with counties to improve their business models. The encouragement from the centre is for the counties to diversify away from cricket, with the widespread recognition the sport alone cannot sustain businesses in the long term. “We have to make sure we have sustainable business models across the circuit and they deliver on those and optimise the opportunities that are in front of counties to overcome the economic challenges out in the big bad world,” said Hollins, who spent January in Australia studying its cricketing business model. “Probably bar two stadiums, Hobart and Perth, at every international ground cricket is a secondary source of income, if that. Our challenge is to diversify so they [the counties] are not reliant on cricket.
