i did not think they would lose this match. i had them losing to sl in sl. i guess the toss did them in. as soon as nz won the toss, i texted a friend of mine "the choke is on!"
as for donald, 1996 lo hansie master move - dropped donald for paul adams! LOL. lara smashed symcox for 5 boundaries in an over.
anyway, it's crazy that this has become such a monster of an issue. it is not a difficult issue to fix. just by sheer probability they should be winning the 2015. very ironicall nzl squeezed the life out of them through fielding, which is very much a SA speciality.
onwards and upwards..... only 1 country will be smiling a week from now! tragedy for all others. i was sick as hell, watching the ind-aus match. i have no idea what my pulse rate will be for the 2nd semi-final.

i just think grit doesn't get noticed when there is too much of talent floating. i don't think there is a more gritty knock than srt's 241* new year's test, 2004 1st innings in sydney. he did not play a cover drive till he reached 200.
srt feeling uncomfy while chasing - i think all batsmen do. definitely more pressure chasing than batting 1st, but i think tendulkar sometimes analyses way more than needed. he plans things too much and doesn't let his game flow. lot of pre-meditated shots and that make him look uncomfy chasing.
anyway, srt in a league of his own. mark nicholas was saying the other day - only bradman at his pomp received the kind of ovations sachin receives when he steps out to bat. it is an event in itself. forget WC quarter-final etc, sachin walking out as the stadium starts roaring - you just have to experience it live.
another experience like that is federer's press conference after a match. he looks the questioner in the eye and answers them. no beating around the bush and BSing. to the point and all the journalists are watching like students in a class.

At the end of the day, even though I decided not to talk abr cricket anymore , I couldnt stop saying this ..
Allan Donald, the player watching whom I grew up and watching whom I developed interest on this game and this team in particular is responsible for disaster 2 times , once directly and one more time today ,though in an indirect manner ..
But my admiration towards that great athlete never ceases , so I am happy that a team who has been playing under his guidance defeated this ...... team. |

before the start of 2003 world cup, some of the SA players wanted to win the cup for hansie.... donald, gibbs, boje, klusener. i think there were other players too. anyway, smith spoke out against that, saying cronje was past and what not. also, smith is a very competitive guy like ponting, klusener is one of a kind.
long story short, after 2003 wc, when smith became captain, he was majorly instrumental in klusener being pushed out of the team. adi matter!

exactly why cross-batted shots should be shelved. i dont know why kallis just never looked settled the whole knock, he just looked too high-strung from ball one. with all his experience, he should have been the one trying to settle down the line-up. it is just too hard not to call it a choke! amla and smith too seemed agitated at the start. way too much energy than a chase of 222 should have. and you could feel all that nervous energy.
even at 100 odd for 2, every one knew it was a matter of 1 wicket. i knew it, nzl definitely were aware of it and very very unfortunately for SA they seemed too aware of it. as soon as abd was run out, ian bishop " you know what everyone is saying now" simon doull said " well, not everybody" so bishop goes "surely 99% of them"

i think du plessis run out ayyi ab survive ayyi unte, we might have witnessed a major miracle in mirpur. nzl were too good. i am glad ryder got that 80 odd. he is like sehwag. loads of talent - if he sheds a few pounds he can become one monster of a batsman. i saw him bat in the hyderabd test match. he had so much time to play some shots, he could have taken a nap and still timed them like crazy. taylor is similar too. taylor, ryder and sehwag bat chestunte, test match kuda ODI laga untundi. they just hate leaving a ball. crazily talented players all 3 of them.
i have a sneaky feeling that the winner is coming from mohali. 52-48 in favour of pakistan. i wish we could just fast forward to wednesday 2:30 pm! ist

The remarkable thing about today's game is Vettori's captaincy. He did fabulous job.
1. He knew 221 was gettable, so he needed wickets to win the game. He was aggressive in field placements and bowling changes.
2. He made fantastic bowling changes right in time. His ploy to go with one fast bowler keeping in mind the nature of the wikcet paid off.
I think other captains should learn a thing or two from Vettori today. |

de villiers was not ill luck! du plessis panicked and had a brain fart and called for that single. that was a classic choke. kallis's pull shot was totally unwanted. that was the one that set the cat among the pigeons!
gambhir did the same nonsense as duplessis yesterday, but uv and raina held their nerves.
anyway, i think all sportsment/teams choke, but SA seem to repeat it like nobody i can think of. it is just damning that a team like SA has not won a single knock-out match in the World cup! (ODI and t-20). just not excusable

Yep totally agree with this.....as soon as they sniffed something....they pounced on to it.....their fielding was remarkable....Guptil was so quick in ABDs dismissal and then orams catch...Guptil atleast saved 10 to 15 runs...everyone looked at right right place at right time...it was jst electrifying... |

probably very true. Walsh said, he would not have picked so many wickets, if ambrose wasnt choking them at the other end so much. it was unfair that these two great bowlers had to perform when the WI batsmen were at their best in recklessness.

Amlas dissmissal was one of the unluckiest...ball kept low...inside edged to keppers shoes and then bounced like a tennis ball into Vettoris hand....intha natakiya mina parinamam nijaga edo shapam la anipichindhi....Dumny, Amla and Divilliars were the inform batsmen....but Dumny cut shot agonst the spinner was poor selection....so except for Duminy their two other inform batsmen succumbed to ill luck .....i wont call it choking....its jst fate ..it was jst not meant to be.....
having said that IMO defining moment was Orams catch to dismiss Kallis....it all went angaist them....hard luck |

I think people are definitely being harsh on smith...kallis and duminy were out of form through out this tournament and even though ksllid made a good effort today, couldnt carry till the end... Amla failed in this most important match and ABD was the only in form player and he too for whatever reason oculdn't finish it...its just one of those days...smith has little to do with it

yep i agree with you, there is one more cricketer who amazed me. the giant Ambrose. as ferocious and as passionate he seems on the ground, once outside, he claims that cricket is not the sport he loves. i was surprised to see his attitude towards the game. he was not a laid back character, and he said he would never make friends with a batsmen who he plays against.

smith did not like klusener's laid back attitude - which is ironic because that is exactly the kind of attitude that will prevent these chokes. safricans are way too determined and committed that it becomes a millstone when crunch time comes calling. in a very shady way, another cricketer with klusener's attitude is agarkar these are the 2 guys, i feel who were realistic cricketers. kind of emotionally detatched from the game. obviously the attitude helped zulu, while with agarkar, he definitely underachieved but the funny thing is, neither would the excellence make zulu proud nor does the underachievement bug agarkar. that's just the kind of guys they are. i can't think of any other sportsmen, forget cricketers, that fit this "cricket is not the only thing in life" attitude.

What a match! This WC has been A-wesome! kudos to nzl, they really killed choke-africa.
i really thought ABD would be the man between SA and a choke and du plessis made sure he got de villiers out of the way. In a very shady way, de villiers should have been selfish and let du plessis be run out, but i guess he underestimated nzl fielding.
this saffer choke thing is one of the weirdest things in sport. SA is a very resilient team which means they should be very strong mentally, but somehow they have managed mess up atleast 3 WC(1999, 2003 and 2011). they had the perfect squad for this WC, but smith's and kallis' lack of form and duminy's "ponting league" handling of spin really hurt them bad at crunch time.
smith deserves this misery for how he dealt with zulu, my 2nd fav player after srt. they should regroup and get ready for 2015. they will be a terrific team with steyn,morkel, tsotso and parnell and with devilliers and duminy and amla and vanwyk.
if it's any consolation - 5 out of 6times they have been knocked out of the WC, sa have been chasing, which is not really bad. chasing in a knock-out is the surest way to getting knocked out. very few teams can chase 250+ scores in a knock out on even the flattest of pitches.
