night matches criteria - to cater to australian spectators. nadal-tomic match was night match not due to nadal, but due to tomic. if there is no australian, then they go for the most spectacular/competitive match of the day. fed-simon and hewitt-nalby were amazing matches. baggy-delpo was quite fun too. AFAIK, fed has not made any official request for day matches. most top players would prefer the night session because it is cooler than day and ofcourse night-time is showtime baby! if fed has a choice, he would love to play the joker when the heat is maximum. unfortunately, fed-joker will be night match on 27th and the other semi-final will be night match on 28th. fed-tipsarevic match in 2008 did not go on till 4:30a.m. it started as a day match at 3 or 4 pm and finished at 8pm or so. the night session then got delayed as venus' match went 3sets. hewitt and bagdhatis started the match around and mid-night and that was a superb 5setter, which ended at 4:30am. because of that, now they alternate the night session. one day women play at 7:00pm and men follow. the next day men open and women follow. murray is playing really solid tennis this ao. he has played the hottest tennis on men's side, as of today. his game his so colourful it matches up really well with both fed and nadal. problem is the british press which piles up unnecessary pressure on the dude. i think he will need someone to take out one of those 2. delpotro is the only guy to have beaten both fed and nadal at the same slam and look where he is now. dolgopolov looks very promising. last 6months, his stock has been on the rise and yesterday was the biggest pay-day for his 6month rise through the ranks. he has played some smart tennis @ melbourne, but he will need to step up another notch from here on in. for me, raonic has been the break-out player of this tournament. followed by tomic/dolgopolov. i hope they convert on that potential much better than the older generation guys like gasquet/berdych/tsonga. another potential future star is dimitrov, whose game is the closest anyone's resembles fedz. (like sachin/sehwag). i would love for dimitrov to step it up like crazy in the next year, but who knows what the future holds. raonic seems the safest bet of the group, right now. i was a die-hard fan of sampras till 02 and was absolutely gutted by pete's loss to roger in 01 wimbledon 4th round ( top 3 match of the last decade for sure) but there is no denying that roger, borg, laver, mcenroe, agassi, rosewall and even rafa are more complete players than sampras. by the time rafa retires, everyone in that list except agassi and mcenroe would even be higher on the all time best list than sampras. v-man : fed plays with his prey quite often. he has been doing that on a regular basis since 2001, when i started following him. fed and sampras are from a different school of philosophy compared to nadal,hewitt or murray. it is a luxury that attacking, offensive-minded players can indulge in ( not only tennis, look at cricket - sehwag, gayle, lara, gilchrist, sachin in 90s, and contrast them with steve waugh, dravid or kallis) sampras used to take it to the extreme, waiting till it was 4-4 to step up his return game. ofcourse, he was dead serious on his service games all the way through. open court lo kottaka poina, that is too heavy a shot to be returned as well as fed did. no doubt stan's not on his game, but fed's wizardry and artistry @ making a bloodsport look like an orchestra is undeniable. fed has played some unbelievably jaw-dropping shots against over-heads before to say this is no fluke. i can remember 4 points off the top of my head where he has done this. roddick in basel 02, hewitt in aus open 04, djokovic in us open 08, soderling in french open 10. except the last one, fed won the point and match in the rest of the 3 matches.
