Mr Y.S. Konda Reddy, a relative of late chief minister Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy approached AP High Court seeking a direction not to screen the film Raktha Charitra 2, directed by Ramgopal Varma. Mr Konda Reddy, a resident of Sagar Society in Banjara Hills in Hyderabad, brought to the notice of the court that he has learnt that the story of the movie revolves around a negative character deliberately made to resemble YSR. He said there was a public furore after former chief minister NTR was portrayed in poor light in Raktha Charitra 1. He contended that projecting Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy in poor light would affect the reputation of the late CM and his family. CERTIFICATION A Right Mr Ram Gopal Varma was. Prior to the release, he proudly said Raththa Charithram had been his most violent film. It has to be, in fact. Plucking the thread from a real-life incident in his native Andhra Pradesh, the film is splattered with innumerable killings, shoot-outs, betrayals and unimaginable bloodshed. The single Tamil version of the two-part film projects Suriya - the protagonist - as the hero, who wants to wreck vengeance on a man who killed his family. There begins a bloody hunt. Undoubtedly, this should be one of Suriya's top-ranked roles. Obviously, he has put his heart and soul into the character and has come up trumps on the strength of his riveting portrayal. His eyes speak volumes of his calibre and class. Priya Mani has nothing much to offer, but she does sizzle in a de-glamorized role. Vivek Oberoi, too, has done a splendid job as Suriya's nemesis, but as far as this version is concerned, he has almost been made to appear as an antagonist.But then RGV says there are no heroes or villains, but only characters from real life. The director certainly deserves a pat on his back for his treatment of the true story, driving home the truth that no one can be entirely good or bad while trying to depict the dark side of two 'negative' lives. Despite the overdose of violence, it can be called an intense film, with so many sub-plots. The screenplay also paints a true picture of the political parties with which they were involved, their families and the women in their lives. But it is Suriya who takes the movie on his shoulders. The film is certain to take the young actor to dizzying heights as this revenge drama has enabled him to deliver an edgy performance that is revealed more through his eyes than through words. RGV can take pride for having come up with an absorbing tale. This attempt can rank alongside the maverick film-maker's classics as just as Sathya and Company. It glitters like a diamond. |
