may be we should elect only those people as PMs who can speak all 18 languages ! However I would like add, Indira gandhi didnt know a word of telugu, but was still able to enjoy huge electoral support from people of AP. Not because people back then, understood every word she spoke in Hindi, but her message was efficiently communicated through various means. So, If people of Andhra were mature enough to a accept a non-native language speaker, I only assume that people from Hindi speaking states are mature as well, dont you think? Also, since ours is a parliamentary system, people don't directly elect PM, Forget campaigning in Hindi MMS didn't campaign at all, how come he got elected as a PM (First term) 2. Serving the country as a PM : This is what I was talking about earlier, and my argument is still the same, effective translation services can do the job. can you elaborate how hindi people tried to dominate others, particularly telugus based on language? i know we had to learn hindi as 2nd language in school but apart from that what others exist? 1.As you pointed out Hindi was shoved down our throat, not because we wanted to learn, because it is required, I don't know if you know this, but the original idea of three language education is that non-Hindi states(not just southern) will learn Hindi as second language, and Hindi speaking states will learn a third language preferably a southern language. NOT one, not even one Hindi speaking state followed this rule, but we still are forced to. 2.The Department of Official languages, unconstitutionally promotes Hindi, do you know that states are classified as A,B,C based upon their Hindi knowledge, and they set goals to make C states B, B states A and so on? Hindi divas was celebrated every year through the country, central govt employees are instructed to use Hindi over local languages, and awards were given to those who do so.. and guess who pays for all this? not just Hindi speakers..every Indians tax money is used to promote one language. 3. Going back a little bit, The govt wanted to make Hindi National language, now this not just a fancy term. It was meant to impact everything, Like the medium of instruction in rural andhra would be Hindi, not telugu. These proposals didnt materialize because of fierce opposition from southern states. If this is not an attempt to dominate, then I dont know what is? and, I am not blaming just the hindi speakers..Ambetkar was very skeptical about allowing linguistic states perform their duties in their language, he opined that,.. that would disintegrate India. He is ok with the formation of linguistic states, but then he wanted every official transaction within the states do to be done in Hindi or english,.. for example if someone in anakapalli wanted to apply for driving licence, he has to fill his details in Hindi or english, why? because writing in telugu would disintegrate the country? thammud - that was written in the constitution at the time of independence...and that too to make it as an official language in the departments administered by the central government and not state governments. Yes, there was an element of error on the part of our constitution writers but that happened 63 years ago. and you need to consider the premise of that which was to avoid communication issues among the various branches of the same department located at different parts of the country and hindi was spoken by majority. I am talking about the recent and current status. However, do you really think that warrants this kind of hatred towards hindi speaking people? its the problem with the government and legislature which can easily be tackled legally. Ishan, Tell me YOU did NOT ask this question. here is a piece of writing as to why tamils hated hindi The Constitution of India came into existence on January 26, 1950. It said that Hindi and English would be the "official languages" of the Central government of India till 1965 (for a period of 15 years); subsequently, Hindi was expected to become the sole "national and official language" of India. This applied to Central as well as State governments. Hindi and English became the "official languages" in every department controlled by the Central government. This explains why Hindi is prominent in the Indian Railways, the nationalised banks, etc, which come under the purview of the Central government. As January 26, 1965 neared, some in the non-Hindi belt, particularly the Tamils, started voicing their apprehensions openly. The idea of making Hindi the sole national language was blasphemous to the students as it involved the simultaneous and complete withdrawal of English, even as a medium for competitive examinations for jobs and education! This meant that the northern region would bag government jobs and dominate the field of education, given the proficiency in Hindi of the people of the region. Since government jobs were the most sought after in the pre-1991 era, the measure was seen as an indirect attempt to deny jobs to the English-educated South Indians. The non-Hindi-speaking people from South India feared that they would be discriminated against in government employment and in other possible ways. Between 1948 and 1961, on an average, every year, close to 24% of Central government officials had been selected from the State of Madras (the present-day Tamil Nadu). Uttar Pradesh came second best, accounting for about 16%. | ||

Discussion point1 : It is NOT mandatory for a PM to know Hindi, but it would be Nice if he does. Honestly, In this day and age, it doesn't matter what language a PM Speaks, there are over a dozen Televisions and numerous news papers competing to provide the best translation services for me. Somebody pointed out devagowda using translation services as if it is a liability, India is the birth place of 100 plus indigenous languages and 3 distinct language groups, If we don't take advantage oF translation services, which country will? Pakistan?? I would like see a Narendra Modi, if he becomes PM to address the Nation in Gujarathi, It just reaffirms our federal nature and emphasizes that every state is as important as delhi. Discussion Point 2: By understanding Hindi, a PM is reaching Majority of Indians First things first..anything less than 50 is NOT majority, Even if we agree to the debatable number of 40% Hindi speakers, what about the other sixty percent, how is the PM going to reach-out to them? A PM needs to reach-out to Every Indian, not just majority or maximum linguistic group. Discussion Point 3: Good Natured DBers who are not Happy with Hindi "Hatred" I see few people saying Hindi is a beautiful language and claiming their knowledge in Hindi and a few other languages. Good for you, but who said Hindi is not a beautiful language or learning more languages is a bad thing? Let me ask you this, do you know any language that is not beautiful?? Please understand that this is not a discussion about the grammer and structure of a language, but is about politics of language and using it as a tool to establish dominance.Language politics claimed thousands of lives in our neighboring countries srilanka and Bangladesh..the All inclusive Umma could do nothing to stop muslim brethren bengalis and pakis killing each other, all because one group tried to unjustifiably claim their dominance using language as a tool. I don't hate Hindi or for that matter any other language, what do we get by hating anything?..nenasaley guluji type frema panche batch.
