VIJAYAWADA, Oct. 3: Proposal for the development of Gannavaram airport is pending for a long time due to slow progress of the land acquisition.
The Gannavaram airport is set in 536 acres of land, about 20 km from Vijayawada city. The government has made proposals to acquire another 465 acres of land for the construction of the international terminal building, extension of runway, provision of approach roads for entry and exit of vehicles, construction of a new tower and enhancing amenities like parking for the passengers.
The Airports Authority of India is ready to invest Rs 100 crore to develop the airport because of its potentiality. So far, only two airlines operate to the airport, each one from Hyderabad and Bengaluru. Proposals have been made for the construction of an airport terminal with international standards, which include restaurant, reading hall, shopping complex, spacious corridors and other recreation facilities.
The Airports Authority of India and the state government signed an MoU in 2007 in which the state government agreed to give land to the AAI free of cost for development.
But, the local farmers are not coming forward to sell their land to the government because the price offered by the government is not satisfactory. As per the open market value, each acre costs between Rs 30 lakh to Rs 40 lakh in Gannavaram mandal.
But, the government rate is very low compared to the open market price. Revenue officials visited the village several times and held discussions with the local farmers. But a consensus could not be reached between the two sides on land sale. A senior officer of the Gannavaram airport said land acquisition process is the biggest hurdle for the development of airport. âWe are ready to develop the airport because of its potentiality to grow in the coming years,â said the officer.
He said an IT Park in Gannavaram requires a good airport to attract investors. Besides, a large number of local youth have settled in many western countries. So, the NRIs can use the airport for travelling purposes. The airport has 7,500 feet runway and needs another 2,000 feet land for landing the big aircraft like Airbus.
Instrumental Landing System works were recently completed in the airport. The ILS will help the flights to take off in all weather conditions. Besides, night landing facility was also completed recently.

Oct. 4: Leaders of the mainstream political parties extended their support to the Bezawada Bar Association which launched a relay fast on Monday demanding that the government set up a High Court Bench between Vijayawada and Guntur cities. The leaders assured the Bar Association that they would support the cause and speak to the government for setting up the High Court Bench. Advocates of all Coastal and Rayalaseema districts decided to launch the agitation from October 8 to press the government to concede their demand on setting up the High Court Bench in the coastal Andhra or Rayalaseema.

The minister for animal husbandry, Mr K. Partha-saradhi, visited the relay fast camp on the court premises and assured that the issue would be discussed in the cabinet meeting. He extended solidarity with the Bezawada Bar Association and assured to help in the struggle for setting up the High Court Bench.

MP Lagadapati Rajagopal also extended solidarity with the fasting lawyers. He demanded that the central government set up the Supreme Court Bench in Hyderabad and the state government to set up the High Court Bench between Vijayawada and Guntur cities. He told the agitating lawyers that he would speak to the Congress leadership and discuss the issue.

Central MLA Malladi Vishnu, Telugu Desam Mylavaram MLA Devineni Umamaheswara Rao, MLC Ilapuram Venkaiah, Praja Rajyam MLA Yalamanchili Ravi, former CPI MLAs Nasar Vali and K. Subbaraju, CPI(M) city secretary M. Raghu and former mayor Mallika Begam were among those who visited the camp and extended solidarity.

Senior lawyer Karnati Ramamohana Rao and the Bezawada Bar Association president Chalasani Ajay Kumar led the agitation. Advocates N. Sudhakar, P.L. Phanish Kumar, Tadikonda Chiranjeevi, N. Prasad, Ms Chamun-deswari, A.K. Basha, Razia Sultana and Sunkara Krishna Murthy were among those who participated the relay fast. The relay fast will continue till the government concedes the demand, the Bezawada Bar Association leaders said.
