Oil is not going up because of a dearth of supply. We have more coming on than we know what to do with. It's incredible how deluged our refineries are with crude from all over the country. I am looking at a dramatically improved output for the first quarter. Then what gives about the price? First, I am beginning to believe that oil overshot on the downside because of a sudden removal of hedges by the airlines as the puts they sold as a hedge became too onerous and they had to wrap up the trade. Airlines seem to hedge similarly, so you could see how the financial buyers would be overwhelmed. Second, Europe's getting better and that means a great deal in terms of demand. Remember, it isn't as if the glut is 10 million barrels or 5 million barrels or even 2 million barrels. It's about 1.5 million barrels a day. So it does not take a huge increase in gasoline use to tighten supply. Third, the political unrest is, at last, starting to affect price. Libyan production is imperiled, and that's almost a million barrels a day. Taking that production off line would explain the run we are seeing. In the end, I believe that the equilibrium point is $65 to $70, but when we get inventory spikes--as I believe will happen today--oil can still move lower. market expected OPEC to cut the production as it always did to maintain price. This time they didn't because they are losing the market share. They want to see the higher cost producers out of the business ie., they want to see the production levelling off in the US and Canada. That way they can maintain the market share of about 30 million bbls. 80 is new hundred antannaru, they will eventually keep the lid at 80 ani. Btw, at the same time all the OPEC countries need much more than current oil price to balance their budgets. But they (mainly Saudi,Kuwait and UAE) have lot more currency reserves than others and can sustain lower prices for couple of years, if it help them in the long run. | ||

let's say we are consuming globally about 90million bbls a day currently. Demand is not growing like it was 10 years ago. 1) US is consuming about 20 million bbls a day against almost 23 million 10 years ago. This is despite all time high sales of vehicles in the US now, it's due to higher efficiency cars (22% more mileage compared to a decade ago). Btw, US is producing about 9.1 million bbls now compared to about 5.5-6.0 5 years ago. Same with Canada, production has gone up quite a bit in the last 5 years and more to come on line in the next two years. 2) EU is decelerating on consumption side due to high unemployment, almost 11% 3) China's growth is decelerating, projection for this year is 7.3%. While it's great for a developed economy but not enough for China which was used to double digit growth rates. 4) India's consumption growth alone won't compensate for slower growth and deceleration elsewhere (when you look at supply picture) In summary, we have about 2 million bbls surplus per day in supply compared to demand. OPEC is not cutting the production and shale guys rig reduction won't be effective for another 18 months. Unless OPEC cuts the production and take all the surplus out, prices won't recover. All the storage in Canada,US and even all very large tankers are almost full. On top of all this, some refineries are scheduled for major maintenance in March/April; meaning more crude available in the market. 2) | ||

His view is that these banks were short crude and now want to cover their trade and go long, hence these dire predictions.
