Apart from that, as Chanti said, Mint mobile.

Mint is TMobilenetwork and an excellent deal

I find RedPocket even better - You can chose the networkVerizon, AT&T, TMobile and Sprint. They have wonderful prepaid deals. Also you can buy yearly with ebay coupon when available. Check ebay and https://www.redpocket.com/

Depends on location. Yes Verizon and AT&T are best. But in most urban areas TMobile is very similar. They have madelot of strides in network in the last 5 years

Eureka:

T-mobile signal antha bagodu ani vinnanu.

As others pointed out, that information is probably not accurate. You can try prepaid T-Mobile cards if you truly want to test. Also, If you used Fi, you more likely than not, have decent coverage with T-mobile.
Apart from that, as Chanti said, Mint mobile.

Does it compare well with Google fi?

uncle google fi is based on 3 networks - T-Mobile, Sprint and US Cellular(?). So if your home/office has these network coverage, you are good.
As OP said Total wireless is based on verizon

if you have issue with T-Mo, then mint also uses T-mo network.
Google Fi is a mix of T-Mo and Sprint.
Or look at redpocket where you can select which netwrok sim you want.
All above are around $20-$30 / month for 2GB - 5GB data range
