Blue_jeans_buddha:

Consider this: The protagonist is entrusted with the responsibility of cleaning the dirty toilet in a jail cell. The scene is artfully captured with the right shades of grey and is as realistic as it can get. However, it is quite bloody difficult to watch it because of the realism. And when the protagonist takes a mobile phone from that toilet, all hell breaks loose.

//4. Should I wait for a Telugu remake?
a) Absolutely not. Classics such as this cannot be remade. Telugu sensibilities will only dilute the experience. Watch it in Tamil - with subtitles.

It is all about that the hamlets that dot the landscape of North Chennai - From Santhom to Ennore as per one of the main characters in the movie. 15 years in the making, Vada Chennai has shades The Godfather and Gangs of New York but is entirely an original story and is probably one of the most interesting gangster movies to hit the marquee in the recent times.

It is not for the faint-hearted though. If you cannot stomach an Ozark or a Sacred Games on Netflix, stay completely clear of any cinema showing Vada Chennai. It is a delightful movie but it is certainly not a delight to watch - at least that is not the word I would use to describe the emotions of a person watching this movie.

Having said that, this is an amazing movie... one that movie connoisseurs should watch at any cost. From an initial cut of over 5 hours, the final version is around 2 hours 40 minutes but it has all the required scenes intact. The narration is a bit non-linear but is not hard to follow or understand. The actors all put in a bloody damn perfect show - including Dhanush but he is surprisingly overshadowed by the likes of Samuthirakani and Daniel Balaji.

Andrea was a revelation. She is gorgeous of course as she has always been, but she nails this role. Watch out for her performance in a key sequence in the second half of the movie.

Aishwarya Rajesh does her role effectively though she doesn't get the same level of screentime as her peers. However, there is no Vada Chennai without her. Without spoiling the movie for you, that is pretty much what I can say about her.

Everything is picture perfect in this movie - from acting to cinematography to background score to the screenplay. Vetrimaaran deserves a national award here. He is the captain of the ship and he steers it with such an aplomb that you are completely drawn into his version of North Madras and when the titles roll by at the end, you are rudely awakened to the fact that you are nowhere near that salty paradise but in a cramped cinema in probably an alien land.

I should mention that Vada Chennai is part one of a trilogy. So the story does not completely end here. However, it is a satisfying end and it sets an intriguing premise for the second part.

Can't hardly wait!

FAQ:

1. Is Amazon the streaming partner?
a) No. At least it didn't splash Amazon logo in the titles.

2. Can watch with kids?
a) Are you kidding? No. Absolutely not. It is an adult theme. There's always blood on the screen. To keep the movie realistic, the language used the characters are pretty much filled with cuss words. Do not take your kids to this movie. I mean it.

3. Should I wait for all the three parts to release?
a) Sure, if you are willing to wait for 5 years. Having said that, part one offers a decent "end" and though there is a cliffhanger, it is one you can live with for a year or two.

4. Should I wait for a Telugu remake?
a) Absolutely not. Classics such as this cannot be remade. Telugu sensibilities will only dilute the experience. Watch it in Tamil - with subtitles.

5. You didn't talk much about Dhanush in your review. Why?
a) Watch the movie :-) You will know. (Dhanush gave a solid performance)
