If you are new to stock market ,it generally have good feeling.I too had that feeling when I shorted Satyam and earned over Rs 2 lakhs in just one day,till i made some bad decisions TYW you have not considered Infosys share splits,bonus shares,dividend etc.In I was holding Infosys share bebtween 2005 and 2008 and,I remember there was a bonus shares issue at 1:1 (and they issues bonus shares around 6 to 7 times at 1:1) .Infosys hit over Rs 2000 in 2007/08 and 1440 is not all time high BTW ,in 1999 Land value in Banjara Hills is Rs 10k per yard.Today it is more than Rs 2 lakhs Any investment may turn into best investment,if you invest 'wisely' | ||

wipro , I bought it in chucks in last 10 years averaged around 5 + dollars, infy around 17 or 18 , don't remember before split and then eventually I sold it off , got some , but nothing much TTM , around 25 , it is 18 or somthing IBN around 9 average .. Just bought it as I thought these are good , well I cannot pick good stock, I sold amazaon around 450 , what can I say, it is not easy for me atleast - | ||

Vunkl, Everyone who is making money should know the rule of 72.. that is a person's money will take 7.2 years to touble if if he is investing somewhere that returns 10% interest. simple for formula - to double your money in 10 years - it should be 7.2 percent to double your money in 5 years - it should 72/5 - 14.4% return to double your money in 3 years - its should be 72/3 - 24% return if postoffice/other savings fund is returning double in 6 years - they are giving 72/6 - 12% returns. If a particular person is not sure which company provides such a return, he should definetly stick to such savings fund or bonds. but, now think of top 5 good companies that you have known for the last 5 years.. check their returns lets say apple, microsoft, amazon - i am sure you would have thought about these three AAPL - last 5 years - 77 to 227 - 250% MSFT - last 5 years - 40 to 112 - 270% you can check others - i.e money would have double in approximately 3.5 yrs ofcourse, its tough to know these numbers before hand, and historical value does not mean the same growth is expected in these stocks. now, consider ETFs, that track indexes rather than individual stocks. something very popular and easy like total stock market exchange VTI - in the last one year the it increasaed 20%, and in the lat 5 yrs it would have fetched about 90%. you dont have to know individual companies, but trust the market that it will do well to be able to invest in this. there is risk, definetly. but with a little bit of education and self interest, the risk can be handled and earn more than putting it in postoffice. but if you have no trust in the market, then postoffice is still a good choice. when it comes to stocks, most people have unreasonable expectations and do not play long. like you were saying, the postoffice returns a fixed return after a 6 yr, people put the money and forget about it. but many folks have a tough time to pay the same restraint in stocks, because you see the numbers changing every minute... and some days it goes low, and fear catches up.. or some days it goes high, and greed catches up and you will start looking for "better earning" stocks... anyway - stocks is a personal game, everyone has their risk coping capabilities... and they need to invest accordingly. problem with stocks is, its easy to take mess up things. | ||
