Main Cases against Jagan : The primary intent of multiple cases (multiple chargesheets) against Jagan was that stakeholders like Hetero Group of companies, M/s Aurobindo group, VANPIC (Nimmagadda Prasad) etc .. bought shares of Jagathi Publications at a premium – Rs.360 a share in return for favors from YSR’s Government (of Andhra Pradesh) – Quid Pro Quo, thus giving more money to Jagan’s business to expand. The cases were filed in 2011 by Sankar Rao (Congress) who was made a Minister by Sonia Gandhi soon after and Yerram Naidu (and others) of TDP at the instance of Chandrababu Naidu who was the Opposition Leader. Details : Jagathi’s share price of Rs.360 (each) was derived by world class financial company - Deloitte based on a 5 year plan of Jagathi Publications (Sakshi). Based on this, the company was valued at Rs.3500 crore in 2007/08. Remember, this was also a time when the stock market was at the peak. To prove the same, Sakshi achieved a Print run rate of 12.56 lakh (for 6 months) in 2009 in its 2nd year and was within 5% of the leading News paper in AP. It was the only Newspaper with all color pages and was designed by Mario Garcia (who designed Hindustan Times) and had 23 district editions across Andhra Pradesh. Sakshi was hailed as one of the fastest and successful business of all time. To compare the valuation, we should look at Eenadu (which was decades old) which was a competition for Sakshi. During the same 6 months period of 2009, Eenadu’s print run rate was 13.16 lakh compared to 12.56 lakh by Sakshi, and so was only leading Sakshi by less than 5%. Eenadu was the biggest part of Ushodaya Enterprises and was the only profit making entity within. On the whole, Ushodaya made a loss of Rs.59 crore for 2007/08. With this background, in 2007/08, Reliance (via Nimesh Kampani of JP Financial) bought shares in Ushodaya at the rate of Rs.5,28,630 per share. This was at an astonishing premium of Rs.5,28,530 per share, giving Ushodaya a valuation of Rs.6500 crore. So, this begs the question on how a premium of Rs.350 per share of Jagathi Publications (owned by Jagan) is considered high compared to the premium of Rs.5,28,530 per share of the competition (Ramoji Rao’s Eenadu) when the run rate was almost the same, and Sakshi was showing tremendous growth prospects. Motive behind Cases on Jagan ? Eenadu/Ushodaya was led by Ramoji Rao the ruthless Media Baron and business man. He is well known to have made NTR the Chief Minister in 1983 and then also known for his notorious coup against NTR via Chandrababu Naidu (CBN) in 1995, resulting in CBN becoming the CM of Andhra, which was followed by the heart attack/death of NTR soon after (1996). It was clear and an open secret that CBN, and thus TDP was hand in glove with Ramoji Rao’s Eenadu. Ramoji Rao was the brain and financier of TDP and in turn was being protected by CBN whenever there’s any danger to his business interests. But when YSR became the CM of Andhra in 2004, his son Jagan Mohan Reddy started Jagathi Publications with Sakshi News paper quickly becoming the darling of people and seriously challenging Ramoji Rao’s #1 News Paper – Eenadu. Soon after Sakshi was announced, CBN and TDP members started making allegations of corruption against Jagan. The allegations were so intense that YSR, in a show of sincerity, volunteeringly ordered CBI investigation on the allegations against Jagan, which was followed by a clean chit to Jagan from CBI. In addition, when a financial audit declared that Margadarsi Funds (owned by Ramoji Rao) would not be able to refund the public deposits in full, CID raided 3 offices of Ramoji Rao’s Margadarsi. This event pitted Ramoji Rao and CBN against YSR and there were intense war of words between them. This is turn resulted in Ramoji Rao selling stake in Eenadu/Ushodaya to outside investors, where Reliance jumped in to help out. YSR led Congress won elections again in 2009, thus forcing CBN and TDP to bench the 2nd time. Clearly CBN and Ramoji Rao were frustrated with this development. But when YSR died late 2009, things began to go against Jagan Mohan Reddy. At the same time Ramoji Rao and CBN started looking at ways to take revenge, and clear the ground for 2014 elections, as they knew that Jagan was a novice. Jagan took up “Odarpu Yatra” (Condolence tour) in 2010 to meet families of who died or suffered shock when YSR died. Sonia Gandhi warned Jagan not to do the tour, to curb his popularity in the state. But Jagan went ahead and subsequently resigned from Congress in 2010. In March 2011, he launched YSRCongress and subsequently won the by-elections in 17 of the 19 constituencies – some with record majority. Soon after Jagan resigned from Congress, Shankar Rao (with instigation from Sonia) from Congress and 3 members of Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP filed a petition in the High Court asking for a CBI inquiry into Company’s that invested in Jagan’s businesses. Subsequently in August 2011, CBI was ordered to launch a probe against corruption charges against Jagan. CBI went about this in a massive way and filed more than 10 charge-sheets. Summary : Clearly political/business vendetta played a huge role in the cases against Jagan. Three big forces - Sonia Gandhi, Chandrababu Naidu - CBN and Ramoji Rao (Media Baron) colluded to halt Jagan’s success in Andhra Pradesh.
