Unprecedented: PM Narendra Modi to go on day-long fast on April 12 to protest against recent Parliament logjam New Delhi: In an unprecedented move, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reportedly plans to observe a day-long fast on April 12, in a bid to protest against the opposition parties, whom the government holds responsible for the recent logjam in the Parliament. All the workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party are also expected to observe the day-long fast across the country. On the other hand, Bharatiya Janata Party chief Amit Shah is scheduled to hold a 'dharna' in Karnataka's Hubli on April 12. He is also expected to hold a symbolic fast for two to three hours in solidarity with the Prime Minister and the other BJP workers, sources said. As per reports, even though the Prime Minister is planning to hold a day-long fast, his daily routine for the day is expected to remain unchanged and he would be attending to all official business scheduled on April 12. Sources also said that the Prime Minister is also expected to hold a 'mega' audio conference with all the BJP MLAs and MPs tomorrow, that is on Wednesday, at 11 am. Earlier last week, MPs of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) had announced their decision to forego 23-days of salaries for which the Parliament did not function. The Budget session of the Parliament was held from January 29 and went on a break on February 9. The second half of the Budget session of the Parliament commenced on March 5 and ended on April 6 and was an almost washout as it was rocked by opposition parties' protests over several issues. Speaking on the decision of the NDA MPs to forego their salaries, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar had said, "It is for the first time that both salaries and allowance have been foregone... but this is not the first time that Parliament has been disrupted... we have tried to raise the moral standard." This move was opposed by BJP's ally Shiv Sena, who said that they are not on the same page on the issue. In fact, BJP MP Subramanian Swamy also did not seem too pleased with the ruling party’s decision to give up its salary for the 23 days of the ongoing Budget session of Parliament. Swamy told the media on Thursday that he attended Parliament proceedings daily and it was not his fault that no business could be transacted. Jairam Ramesh asks Venkaiah Naidu for 'special session' of Parliament; BJP wonders if it's for 'salaries' On the other hand, in wake of the complete washout of the Parliament session, Congress senior leader and Rajya Sabha MP Jairam Ramesh wrote a letter to Chairman Venkaiah Naidu and sought a special two-week session in May-June to "pass important legislation". In the letter, he wrote, "I am aware that the Monsoon Session will be called sometime in mid-July, but a special session sends a different message altogether." However, Bharatiya Janata Party took a dig at the Congress party over this demand. Vijay Goel, BJP leader told news agency ANI, "First they don't let the session run, now they are asking for another session. Do they want salaries and allowances again?" The BJP held Congress responsible for the washout in the second phase and also decided to go on a hunger strike on April 12. The Telugu Desam Party, on the other hand, put the blame on the former ally BJP saying that it was practising divide and rule method to run away from providing special status to Andhra Pradesh. |
