I don't prefer any company that is in very later stage of funding..like 4th or 5th round..cos the valuation is jacked up and you will end up paying more per share compared to those who bought in early rounds..you will paying almost same as the IPO price or some times the valuation may come down and share price will go down by final round ,below the price you have paid Look for unicorns.study/research the company (it's performance ,market,scope for growth ,competitors,the founders back ground,the investors,their holdings,etc) and always do your due diligence I know a investor who had invested over $200k in bloom energy 3 yrs back hoping to make profit ..but there is no sign of IPO or getting acquired..though initially Google and some other major companies were interested to acquire.His funds are locked out.. This is not real estate or regular stocks to liquidate in emergencies. If you don't need money for atleast 5 years or more,you can invest Remember, you may not be investing directly in the stock,but in a fund that holds shares in the stock and you will have share in the fund ,to the extent you paid (quantified in terms of shares in the company).
