Fiction...mehhh..whats the point?

Coming to the books..Recently read a lot about maths and its history ( i am math phobic..thats why i decided to take a plunge into it)

Fermat's enigma: by Simon Singh ..no funky equations...can be read/understood by any 10th fail also...i suggest this book to all...covers lot of history of numbers, geometry ... how a little known theorem can not be solved for 300 yrs..how wiles solved it and won it 1997

Music of Primes by Marcus du Satuoy ( If any body want to listen to science/maths/religion etc ..he is the go to guy..prof in Oxford..regular in BBC)..Covers the entire history of math from Babylonia,India, greeks and modern math starting from Euler,Gauss and Hilbert.
Book about Reimann hypothesis (holy grail of pure math) and the Church of math (University of Gottingen)..Why primes occur randomly/but there is an order in it..what is it?

Math/science/history interest vunna vallaki must read books

Just came back from a lecture by Neil deGrasse Tyson on Cosmic Collisions! He is an excellent speaker !
His book ‘Astrophysics for people in a hurry’ has been on the bestseller list for 36 weeks - and his audio book got nominated for a Grammy in the spoken word category - need to pick that up :-)

Catch 22 is a bit of a chore to read. I picked it first in college then dropped it as it was tedious. There is no obvious plot, so it does not grip you. One can read a few pages here and there and have a laugh. Then, treating it as an insult, i picked it up again and finished it. It was enjoyable, that is all i can say.

The movie Catch 22 was a failure, while MASH (which was a less popular book) movie, covering a similar subject - but less wacky, was vastly more successful and then the TV series became legendary.

Read a small book “Collapse of Western Civilization†over the weekend. It takes a futuristic view on how climate change and the unwillingness to get off of fossil fuels destroyed a great civilization and how China is able to do it given their political agility.

Sensible book.

What fools call "wasting time" is most often the best investment.
A man without a heroic bent starts dying at the age of thirty.
The difference between slaves in Roman and Ottoman days and today's employees is that slaves did not need to flatter their boss.
You are rich if and only if money you refuse tastes better than money you accept.
Modernity: we created youth without heroism, age without wisdom, and life without grandeur.
You can tell how uninteresting a person is by asking him whom he finds interesting.
Procrastination is the soul rebelling against entrapment.
Preoccupation with efficacy is the main obstacle to a poetic, elegant, robust and heroic life.
Those who do not think that employment is systemic slavery are either blind or employed.
They are born, put in a box; they go home to live in a box; they study by ticking boxes; they go to what is called "work" in a box, where they sit in their cubicle box; they drive to the grocery store in a box to buy food in a box; they talk about thinking "outside the box"; and when they die they are put in a box.

....Selected aphorisms from "The Bed of Procrustes" from Taleb

Anand_n:

I was surprised to see Harry Potter on your 2017 list ... why so late ?

Read the first one ages back, never cottoned on to it, so did not read the subsequent ones. I started reading this year again to give company to my kid and then when she started racing ahead of me, i stopped after Book 3. Will have to read the rest this year.

Anand_n:

Did you read finders, keepers by Sapan Saxena? Was it any good?

What is this, never heard?

If you read epic fantasy - i read a book Name of the wind by Patrick Rothfuss. Worth picking up. The real reason i picked it up, apart from the great reviews, was that there were only 3 books rather than the 7-10 for most other fantasy series. The flip side is that Book 3 is not yet out and fans have been waiting for donkeys years for it.

For many of us the lure started in childhood - the ability to vicariously be the spy kid, solving mysteries or going into different worlds ...traveling without leaving your room .. now video access provides that to many of the kids :-)

Hari Seldon is a fictional character in Isaac Asimov's Foundation series. In his capacity as mathematics professor at Streeling University on the planet Trantor, Seldon develops psychohistory, an algorithmic science that allows him to predict the future in probabilistic terms. On the basis of his psychohistory he is able to predict the eventual fall of the Galactic Empire and to develop a means to shorten the millennia of chaos to follow. The significance of his discoveries lies behind his nickname "Raven" Seldon.

Gandhiguevara:

N = NP? entee gola

P Vs Np concerns with whether you can write a computer program/algorithm to solve a problem for which solution it is easy to check whether it is right ot wrong, but impossible to come up with a solution in the first place (in a finite/polynomial time)

one of the most central problems in computational complexity and philosophy. If you are able to prove or disprove you will win a million dollars....around 4 yr ago, an indian scientist from HP purportedly given a proof saying that p=/Np...but later debunked

But the most interesting thing is it is not only impossible to derive a solution, but impossible to approximate also

Subhash Khot (IIT guy now in Courant) 10 yr ago proposed a UG conjecture exactly proposing the above that it is impossible to approximate also

very interesting disco below

Drishyam movie was inspired by the book ani thelusu but cheppaledhu. Naku thelisina kani, it didn't hinder my enjoyment of the book. In fact the movie was very very loosely based anukovachchu. The twist towards the end is remarkable. N = NP? entee gola...

Drishyam cinema ki original ani munde cheppi vunte boldu time save ayyedhi... kinda guessed that murder twist but vaadu enduku chesaadu anedhi last chapter lo explanation convincing gaane vundhi... N=NP concept introduce ainappudu hint dorikesindhi... Keigo saarvaadu mathematician anukunta and I think they should write mathematics books in similar way to engage students... Good read though...

Last 5 pages lo vundagaa Gachar Gochar book delivery ayyindhi... adhi kudaa chadivi pedatha... 128 pages ye ... cute
