I think it strikes the right balance of showing the open-mindedness that is good for everyone, but especially important for immigrants, while not giving up your won self-respect and culture. I would add a few more that are more important for people who have been here for some time and have already assimilated: 1. Don't take offense if someone is talking to you by spelling out every word carefully, as if you can't understand English. Remember, in his mind he is trying to help you. 2. Be open to American festivals. Get a tree at your home for Christmas. Give Christmas gifts to your postman, kids school bus drivers, teachers and teacher's aide's, all neighbor's kids etc. It does not have to be too expensive. We keep a $10/person budget, and our list this year were 45 people - the $$ part is usually not important. 3. When wishing someone - say Merry Christmas. 4. Don't bore someone to death for the entire 2-hour train ride explaining what Diwali means - just because she expressed curiosity seeing you (in this case - my wife) in the train in an ethnic dress. I'm sure there are many others I can think of. All that said - there is a section of population that are plain hostile towards any foreign culture. The correct word for them is xenophobic. So far - avoidance has worked for me whenever I have encountered this - thank god xenophobia is not yet as physical as it used to be in the earlier years (watch "Gangs of New York"). please look at the article in a positive way and retrospect yourself... both individually and as a group t work place.. and at public places, in stores.. etc Also, try not to talk in Desi languages. Try to speak English. use mint/mouth wash for mouth and use de-oderant/mild perfumes respect local culture. Be as part of local society. There are several bleaches available on Amazon, you can get white real quick, 6-10% hydroquinone works wonders ...if not there are some realistic looking silicone masks, and use blue contact for the eye and dye your hair blonde. Make your name sound chris or Fitzgerald ... for height use shoes with 6 inch sole .. all set | ||

Don't go out on public and cause a stir. - Being a better person (not being reckless - being kind and helpful goes a long way) - Inculcating best civic and social values - same as Native folks - Finally don't do anything that causes your group to be put to shame. Hold yourself to highest standards. Now all of these, will not guarantee 100% you wont face the wrath, but this has certainly helped me personally in the last decade I lived here. Times I look like shit, I get cold responses. Times I look and behave awesome, people are nice to me as well. There was a time, a homeless guy gave me a middle finger, when i was on my way to work, with a nice tie,shirt and trousers, well polished shoes. But I felt bad that he was homeless and offered to buy him a coffee and he gladly accepted and apologized for his actions. So, nuances and details of being a good immigrant - is not a part of your LCA/H1B/I-140. But its just the ground reality. Now, I know there are lot of reckless folks here that would say - "I code well, I can look like shit. Mark zuckerber wears grey t shirt". Just know that you are NOT mark zuckerberg. You are at a point in history where, 1/3rd of the nation hates you. Or 1/2 the voting population hates you. So please consider being presentable and nice at all times). Happy New year all!
