this site is very good. None of the earlier calculators had AMT component. His numbers came close to what I calculated . I thought I would be getting around1.5k but I will be paying around 1k more.
All those Other calculators included child credit in calculation but did not specifically mention . So I might have double counted it.

This will be mostly case of people who itemize SaLt, pay significant mortgage interest and have paid AMt last year. You save number dhaggara agodhu.. go into AMT calculation:-)

Jalsa:

line 43 is more than 83K

good for you. but its actually more complicated as 83,000 is the exemption allowed for AMT for joint filers.

If you truly want to know. take your taxable income and add following numbers back
State and local income taxes
Real estate and personal property taxes
Miscellaneous itemized deductions, such as employee business expenses
Interest on home equity loans
Deduction for a net operating loss
The standard deduction, if you took it instead of itemizing

if you take any other deduction, check back irs site if it cant be allowed in AMT calculations.

This will be your new taxable income. now there are two paths
1) assuming your taxable income is lesser than 159,700, you deduct 83,800 and then calculate 26% tax on remaining. if this amount is greater than tax amount of 1040, you have to pay AMT else not.
2) if your taxable income is greater than 159,700, you loose 0.25$ for every dollar income after this. so lets your taxable income is 169,700. you have $10,000 more than threshold. so your exemption of 83,800 becomes 83,800-(10,000*0.25) i.e. $81,300 increasing your AMT taxable income and then AMT tax.

after you choose any path above, if your taxable income after exemption is greater than 186,300 then you pay 28% rate.

Jai_ycp:

How much is your taxable amount last year. If filing jointly, and taxable amount is less than <83K then AMT kicks in.

Unless you have business where you are taking many deductions, this wont happen to you. This is line 43 of your 1040 not Line 36 (this is AGI before deductions hence will be larger).

line 43 is more than 83K. line 45 lo emi ledhu.

Moviebuff001:

Depends.
Generally, most taxpayers will avoid this underpayment penalty if they either owe less than $1,000 in tax after subtracting their withholding and estimated tax payments, or if they paid at least 90% of the tax for the current year or 100% of the tax shown on the return for the prior year, whichever is smaller

Thanks...I will get a better idea after checking my previous return...

Guys - Please note that the site is calculating the state/local income and sales taxes automatically plus u have to include all the additional itemized deductions carefully... it may not match penny to penny with ur tax returns... Please use it as a guesstimate to get a ball park idea...

Thanks to Maxim Lott, his website will help you understand how the tax plan will impact you... its very straight forward and gives you a side by side comparision of Current Tax System and Tax Reform Bill.. Site calculates state/local income and sales taxes automatically.

Put in the numbers and get an idea of how the tax bill will impact you...
