In all these discssions about Indians taking H1B's, we keep saying no Americans take or do these jobs. But we cant openly say that. H1B- > a) No americans are willing to do those jobs with b) the salary that works for the client. Skill is secondary in most of these discussions as most of the people learn on the job or atleast the WITCH companies provide basic training | ||

Often, the American employee is asked to train the Indian employee before being let go. The H1-B program was in dire need of reform. | ||

Most of the slots are not taken up by individuals such as the author who would be paid in excess of $150K per year at a minimum, but $60K per year warm bodies from body shops such as TATA and Infosys. The system is being gamed so US wages for IT positions can be depressed and people in India can get out of poverty, all at the expense of the US citizen. I would have no problem with the H1-B program if every single slot were taken up by people with Ms. Yu's provenance. Alas, this is not the case. Increasing the minimum salary for H1-B recipients to $90K if they do not want to look for a US citizen is a good start but hardly the solution. ShaneMarin County, CA H1-B holders are routinely paid less by companies than equivalent American workers and that is especially true in Silicon Valley. Because of that - they drag down the pay scale for American workers. In addition, as the NYT showed in 2015 with its exposé on Disney, companies are firing large numbers of American workers and importing lower paid contractors to take their place through companies based in India, companies like Tata Consultancy Services. As a matter of fact, 80% of H1-B visas are issued through just 4-5 large consultancy companies (Infosys, Tata, Winpro & HCL), most based based in India, who then send these workers to the US at low wages to displace American workers. The H1-B program needs a major revamp, it's been abused for a long time and is no longer even remotely close to what its creators envisioned it would be. | ||
