So the point of the book, which I think is valid, is that we should consciously try to create 'highs' in our lives to create memories and to make life more meaningful. We can do this by breaking the daily grind in many ways: - Take professional risks - raise the stakes and feel alive - Take exotic vacations with family - Social connections - Sensory pleasures - fine food, wine, reading/writing/taking time for our passions If we do not do any of this, how could we magically expect life to be joyful? We need to do 'something' to break the script and feel alive. Sorry I am not judging you but going by your posts, I don't even think you are trying to do anything about the situation - you don't seem to take any professional risks, you hate social interactions by your own admission, you hate the daily grind. I understand you have endured a personal tragedy that may be contributing to your sense of insecurity - a feeling that whatever you have may be taken away. Platy - I think it is extremely common for people (post 35) to get into an auto pilot mode with no real highs or peaks in their lives - this reality of not having enough "highs" in life may lead us to believe our lives lack purpose. 'Highs' are usually milestones, achievements, transitions or social connections that elevate us and give us a sense of pride. I was reading a very interesting book that explains how our brains create and store memories. Our brains tend to only store highs or lows - the rest is bundled into 'daily grind' and is quickly forgotten. So over time, if we do not have enough 'highs' in life, that time period is coded as 'daily grind' and adds no real value to our memory bank. They have conducted a study that proved most people's best memories fall between the ages of 15 and 30 - isn't that interesting? It is because that period - 15 to 30/35 is usually packed with a lot of action - transition from school to college, first job, first love, first breakup, marriage and kids. | ||
