Rakul behavior during auto episode is typical girls behavior. I find that many people are founding it odd. She has only an hunch but was scolded down. Women think emotionally rather than logically

Rakul Preet Singh's character is to put it mildly, infuriating. At a time when everyone is tensed and looking desperately for even a slimmer of a clue - Rakul has the name of the hospital and she refuses to share it with Mahesh because, get this, Mahesh snaps at her! This results in the team trying to triangulate her autorickshaw and reach her personally to get that information - wasting valuable and precious minutes in the process. What does it tell you about her character?

What do you name a movie where the protagonist is not a spy; doesn't employ any intelligence techniques that draw inspiration from a spider; and has no reference to anything remotely spider related throughout the movie? Why, Spyder of course it is. Makes a lot of sense, ain't it? Introduce this title to the audience with a well constructed teaser about a robotic spider crawling up the protagonist's pants. To be fair, the makers did attempt to warn us that there would be no spider per se in the movie and the teaser is pretty symbolic. However, I wonder what it is symbolic of. As I said in the first sentence, there is nothing in the screenplay that reminds us of spiders.

Okay. Here's a plausible explanation. The hero has a piece of software that listens to people's phone conversations and has the capability to tap into a completely end-to-end encrypted WhatsApp chat! That software can be called the spy. Then it uses the internet, and a few other networks interlinked. Perhaps the worldwide web? Does that satisfactorily explain the spider part? You take a call on it.

The hero is a lowly clerk in the basement of a highly futuristic intelligence bureau. This guy is bloodly brilliant and has come up with this "spying" software that uses multiple "webs". He doesn't listen to all the conversations of course because he is a nice person. Only when the screen screams HELP, he picks up the headphones and more often than not, manages to singlehandedly thwart any impending doom for the helpless aam junta of Hyderabad. He doesn't use the police machinery or for that matter the skillset or the wherewithal of the 24 floors of magnificient Intelligent Bureau capabilities that sit above his head.

That is fine, of course - because that is how most Telugu movies operate. The setup opens up a myriad of opportunities to display superhero capabilities and elevated heroism - a staple diet of the commercial Telugu cinema. However, A R Murugadas steers clear of any such antics and grounds his hero firmly in the third floor below the basement. He is pretty clear about one thing. This movie does NOT star Superstar Mahesh. No sir, not at all. It is all about Just Mahesh. Though he is responsible for saving hundreds of hapless junta, none of it effectively translates into adrenaline pumping action on the screen leaving us wondering if we are all watching the highlights of a superhit cricket match instead of the full version.

Anyway, long story short - this spying web crawling software unearths a serial killer and the protagonists makes it his life ambition to arrange a meeting for the man with his maker. How he does it should form the rest of the story, right? It is only logical to expect that the hero would employ some innovative Thuppaki-ish ideas to frustrate the bad guy and finally dispatch him to the afterlife. Interestingly, that is not how it pans out in this saga. The bad guy is always in charge; and always two steps ahead of the hero and is always happy. On the other hand, the good guy is running around; trying to catch up; completely distressed and frustrated.

After what seems like an eternity, the good guy employs some novel thinking to figure out the hiding hole of the psycho and eventually gets him arrested after a totally implausible-even-by-Telugu-movie-standards sequence. All well and the fat lady is about to sing that high note? Not exactly. This is perhaps the only instance in the movie where the hero has some kind of an upper hand over his nemesis. Sadly, it would mean that the movie would get over in less than 2 hours. So, there is an extension of the story... an afterthought that attempts to right the wrong that there is no superstar in this movie resulting in a sequence of events - The bad guy breaks out of custody; A cartoonish, bad CGI boulder creates havoc in the city; A hospital crumbles and people live happily ever after - not necessarily in the same order.

The graphics work in this movie is extremely bad. It is so bad that you desperately want the appalling sequence to end and run out of the cinema for fresh air. There are some interesting ideas there but sadly marred completely by the pedestrian graphics and screenplay. What should have been an emotional rescue sequence sadly fizzles out.

Mahesh gets so much into the skin of the character that he is almost invisible - because the role is heavily underplayed and always a step or two behind the most visible character of the movie - The psycho - played to perfection by SJ Surya. He walks away with all the laurels here and completely and comprehensively overshadows Mahesh. Mahesh tries hard to be relevant but is let down by the dearth of opportunities. There is a thick line that separates a superstar from an actor. Mahesh crosses that line successfully most of the time but there are couple of instances where you would wish for a little more energy from him.

Cut down all the sequences in the movie that deal with Rakul Preet Singh and your experience will be better. Nothing more can be said about that track.

I am sure I have already heavily spoiled the movie for you. However, I am going to discuss a few other aspects here. If you haven't watched the movie and is looking forward to it, stop reading here. Be warned that this movie is not something you'd take your kids to. It is not suitable for young children.

When you are directing a superstar, you should let man handle a few things for you. Instead of that cartoonish hospital episode, the movie could have ended properly with the capture of SJ Surya after the TV Serial episode. Once Mahesh finds out the location of the house using his highly innovative idea, he should have gone there with a set of black cat commandoes. Hell, he could have gone there alone because it is a Telugu movie and rescued the hostages. He could have killed SJS then and there itself - when the man is truly down and ended the movie on a high note. It would have been a far more satisfying experience to all of us.

Instead of showing the man as a lone daredevil in the basement, you could have shown him as the leader of an elite squad that works 24/7 - treading the thin line that separates privacy concerns with safety requirements carefully. The first half could have had a few more scenes that establish the effectiveness of the squad.

My rating: I leave it to your judgment.
