Whitecollar, I am not sure but I don't think there is an equivalent caste in AP. They run large number of schools(and maTams) via a society. This move is for the privilege being enjoyed by minorities. If they are gived minority status, govt cannot take over their maTams(lke govt cannot take over churches/mosques). Central education laws don't apply to them if they get non-Hindu status. In the past, Ramakrishna Mission(started by Vivekananda, no less) also claimed they are not Hindus to get minority privileges. This minority tag is the ultimate prize in India. Siloan, Cong already drafted Communal Violence Bill - this is on the lines of SC/ST atrocity act. When minority and majority are in a fight, majority are presumed guilty and arrested like in SC/ST case. Your cousin or father goes to a shop run by Muslim and gets into a small fight, your cousin/father will be put in jail by default - regardless of who is at fault. | ||

Siloan, don't betray the cousins you left behind. Show an example where BJP took away rights from anyone. Art 19(1)(g) gives right to profession. Supreme Court gave equal rights to Hindus in 2002 per Art 19(1)(g). Sonia inserted Art 15(5) overriding this i.e, The right to profession given by Article 19 is taken away from Hindus. For now, it is only education. IN future, if Cong comes to power again, they might take away rights from other professions. This is Art 15(5) "(5) Nothing in this article or in sub-clause (g) of clause (1) of article 19 shall prevent the State from making any special provision, by law, for the advancement of any socially and educationally backward classes of citizens or for the Scheduled Castes or the Scheduled Tribes in so far as such special provisions relate to their admission to educational institutions including private educational institutions, whether aided or unaided by the State, other than the minority educational institutions referred to in clause (1) of article 30.". | ||

I suspect this special privilege is the reason why only minority institutes are showing interest in Amaravathi. XLRI - Christian minority, VIT-Tamil minority(?). Telugu Hindus won't be having autonomy in running edu in Amaravathi. Even if CBN govt makes a contact about jobs/quotas in exchange for land or other stuff, he cannot enforce the contract. Recently Delhi court voided such a contract under Art 30(1). | ||

In 2002, supreme court gave equal rights to Hindus on par with minorities in education sector(before that judgement, rights of Hindus <<< rights of minorities) As soon as UPA govt came to power, they inserted Art 15(5) to override the supreme court judgement. Now rights of Hindus << rights of minorities - back to status before 2002 SC judgement. It is now leading the charge to get a separate religion tag for the Veerashaiva Lingayat community. In a move that could have huge social and political impact ahead of the forthcoming Assembly election in the state, five ministers belonging to the Veerashaiva community in the Sidddaramaiah cabinet have decided to take the lead in evolving public opinion in favour of declaring Veerashaiva Lingayat community as a separate religion. The team comprising Higher Education Minister Basavaraj Rayareddy, Minister for Mining Vinay Kulkarni, Minister for Medical Education Sharan Prakash Patil, Minister for Municipal Administration Eshwar Khandre and Horticulture Minister S S Mallikarjun is set to tour the state soon to bring greater momentum for the movement for a separate religion. They are set to meet Veerashaiva Lingayat leaders, Lingayat muttsâ heads and social thinkers to seek their opinion on the demand. Based on the response, the team will submit a memorandum to Siddaramaiah urging him to recommend to the Centre to declare Veerashaiva Lingayat a separate religion. Announcing the initiative, Rayareddy, however, clarified that it was not an official move of the government. âAll the five of us are from the Veerashaiva Lingayat community and it is our community-based initiative to get the much-delayed religion status to the community,â he said. | ||

Perfect example of how Congress works. The larger project of breaking up Hindu society. They want to declare Lingayats a separate religion because if you are a non-Hindu, you get legal benefits under Artcle 30(1), Article 15(5)-inserted by UPA Govt. These two articles provide autonomy to run educational inst and places of worship - this privilege is there only for minorities.
