Weekend and some weekday movies also. Janatha Garage gurinchi thread already padindhi. Angamaly Diaries – a frenetic, chaotic, violent, comic look at the soft pink pork underbelly of small town Angamaly. One of the most visceral movies I have seen in years – country bombs, 10 ml in the afternoon or evening (or night), pork chops, beef fry, pig slaughter, tapioca and banana chips, hole in the wall gambling dens, Sunday mass, atavistic passions, gun running and that bravura ending which would make a Scorcese or PT Anderson proud. And to imagine that this movie was made totally with newcomers with no known actor is truly remarkable and enhances the rawness in the movie. My only grouse with the movie is that it is too loud – everyone is literally shouting and screaming in the movie. Sairat – the biggest blockbuster ever in Marathi, again shot entirely with a bunch of raw actors who have never faced a camera before. That is the main reason I guess behind the huge success of this movie as the story is nothing remarkable and has been dealt with in countless number of movies, more notably in Tamil in movies like Kaadhal. The music is fresh, the actors even more so though the pace slackens in the second half and there are long stretches that could have seen a better editor. The director touches upon a lot of interesting topics fleetingly as a detailed exploration would have been outside the scope of the movie – saffron violence, industrialisation flattening caste hierarchies but also dehumanising, Dalit vs Maratha politics etc. The lead actors are both very impressive as are the supporting cast. Maheshinte Prathikaram – subtle, witty, gentle slice of life kind of movies that are probably made only in Malayalam now. Set in small town Prakash in Idukki, the movie gently examines the life, loves and revenge of Mahesh, a photo studio owner. The lead actor, Fahad Faasil, delivers an excellent, nuanced performance. I had only seen him in some suave urban roles earlier, but he is totally unrecognisable here and makes it worth a dekko only for his acting. The movie looks like it has dropped out of a RK Narayan page painted in the lush green colours of rainy Idukki. Dhruvangal Pathinaru - a murder mystery, very intelligently made, plotted. A solid police procedural that delivers till the last few minutes. But the unravelling of the mystery left me underwhelmed. Apart from Rahman and Delhi Ganesh, largely made with new comers. It is definitely worth a watch. Mukti Bhavan – an old man desires to kick the bucket in Varanasi and son goes along to see him settled into an ashram. But the stay extends as the old man continues to live on. The son has problems dealing with an angry boss and demanding household. The movie could have been a soppy tearjerker, but the story is handled with a dash of dry humour, gently weaving in thoughts about life, death, love and longing, spirituality, religion, etc without bringing out the hammer. | ||
