Where is this coming from? Even Rafa fans say that Federer is the most complete player to step on a tennis court.

Djokovic's net game is really non-existent. It is so bad that he's a liability in a doubles team (unlike the other 3 Big4 and Wawrinka and majority of the top players).

Djokovic has a complete baseline game, but the Serve and net game, in particular, are far from complete.

Nole was super aggressive in his 2011 Peak mode. Watch the 2011 US Open semis with Fed.....Or any of his matches with Nadal tht year....

Post 2013.....he greatly improved his serve under Becker.....developed great variations on his serve and made it an asset.

His best matches in 2016 where he was in all out attack mode was in Doha final against Nadal....and Aus Open Semis against Fed.

To say he destroyed them in the First 2 sets wud e an understatement.

Tht is the Peak version of Nole before he fell off the cliff.

His net game is vastly underrated. One thing he still isnt good at is Overhead Smashes. Literally cost him FO 2013.

Nvr compare Nole with Fed. He might not be more aggressive but is more rounded and complete.

Surprised to see you say he is more aggressive than Rafa and Murray.

he's aggressive than Murray and Nadal, which was hardly the case pre-Becker. Under Becker, he greatly improved his serve adding more MPH at the same time hitting spots much better, which allowed him to finish points sooner in his service games, and also get a lot of cheap points with increased ace counts/unreturnable serves.. also he's been going for his shots relatively better than pre-Becker.. will have to see how he does going forward now that Becker is gone.. clearly his focus should be continuing with the same game or even better it if he wants to win more big titles..

Frodo:

Aggression wise, he is clearly better than Nadal and Murray. He will have to hire the right coaches to keep that up, though - which I think he will.

The main thing is going to be the serve. If he can keep that up at atleast the 2011-2013 level, he will be fine. Anything above that will be a bonus.

Fed took a leaf out of the Djokovic manual on the returns and backhands in this match. On the returns, Fed focused on the depth rather than the angle - a deep return right in the middle of the court was Djokovic's big calling card under Becker. It's counter-intuitively, a great aggressive move.

On the backhands he made it a point to take the ball on the rise, as much as possible to stay ahead of the bounce that Nadal's top spin generates. Of course, he had tried this in the past as well, but as i mentioned, the new racquet helped him execute this with much more success....

Thanks for your analysis. Surprised to see you say he is more aggressive than Rafa and Murray. I've seen Murray change angles of shots to win which Nole doesn't do it often.

Let's hope he picks a right coach.

There are 2 ways to counter the high-spin to a SHBH.

One is the time-tested claycourter's way - most shbh claycourt players in the 90s like Kuerten and modern players like Gasquet, Wawrinka and Henin on the women's side employ this. What they do is stay back and let the ball bounce and take it on its way down (2nd half of the parabola that is created once the ball hits the ground and takes off). Generally these players have extreme western grips on the backhand and because they give themselves the extra time, they can generate immense power off that wing.

The other method which is employed by doublehanded backhand (DHBH) players and players like Federer who refuse to give up the baseline is to move in and take the ball while it is on the rise (first half of the parabola that is created after the ball hits the ground and takes off). Needless to say, since you are depriving yourself of the time when going for this shot, you need to be very accurate and reliable with your backhand wing.

Which means that, on the slower surfaces only the DHBH guys can really make it a percentage shot. for a SHBH player it is a high risk shot. That is why Federer struggled with Nadal, all these years on the slow surfaces. At Wimbledon and other fast surfaces however, his backhand was far from the liability that people made it out to be. This bigger racquet however has helped with that extra control required on the slower surfaces and the result was the dazzling show he put up....

If Murray can do it with lendl, so can Novak with someone like lendl. Murray has changed his style with lendl.

Interesting point about net play and four hand backhand. He sucks at net play. Serve also is not such a strong point.

Yes, to counter taking the high top spin at his shoulder level (thus negating his backhand power), he is taking the ball on the up, almost like a cricket cover drive. And Nadal's pace dropping a couple of miles means that Fed can do that without appearing as if he is rushing into the stroke.

Tennis became boring now, Top 15 can not challenge Top 4 and the junior talent is bringing nothing new to Tennis except copying Fed/Nadal/ Joker..

Tennis is dead...Only Tennis players are alive...Federer is the last player who knows how to play Tennis..rest of the players know how to tackle the opponents

If any one has watched Berasategui playing Tennis, it would definitely reminded him when they see Nadal playing..

Nadal has that unique forehand no body in the history of Tennis has had, Federer movements are similar to Gustavo Kuerten

Jalsa:

Frodo bro, this is what I was talking about. Look at how fed goes for winners aggressively. I haven't seen Novak do that consistently. He fetches the ball from anywhere but the kind of angles fed hit in the above video, I don't see Novak doing that.

It will be hard to match-up with Fed on the aggression scale :

backhand - SHBH is custom-made for aggression. DHBH is more for solidity and reliability.

forehand: Djokovic's greater wing is the backhand. Over the years he has obviously done a great job with his forehand, but his naturaly ally, like with Murray is the backhand (unlike Fedal)

serve: Federer hits the spots the best (possibly the 2nd greatest after Sampras) and is a supreme clutch server (possibly the greatest of all time, 3rd set 1st game on 3 different break points, he serves laser guided missiles at about the same spot - it's like watching an action replay).

Djokovic was helped immensely by Becker on this front. He will have to find the right voice to keep helping him do that. Early on in his career he tried working with Todd Martin but it was a spectacular failure.

Net game: Fed is a natural volleyer (the SHBH helps bigtime here). However, this has always been my criticism against people calling Djokovic a complete player - his net game is abysmal (Even Roddick had improved it over the years. among GS Champs, ND maybe the worst I have seen - excluding the clay courters). In this aspect, I give kudos to Rafa - the way he improved his net play and slice game, unlike other Clay-court based Champions should be a must read manual for any double-handed backhand player.

baseline positioning: Djokovic matches Federer on this front, but unlike Federer who is always looking to move in and does so, Djokovic - particularly on the backhand wing doesn't move in as much.

Bottomline is Federer has a game that naturally lends itself to aggression. Djokovic's has been built for percentage play. He will have to keep working with aggressive players like he did with Becker - that 2014- 2016 period was the most offence based game he played.

Even when he plays aggressive, his game will be different than RFs because he will use the return (much more aggressive than RF here) and backhand down the line more than the serve, backhand cross-ccourt/inside-out fh and the net game that RF bases his aggression on.

He changed to a bigger racquet in 2014 for exactly this reason - to get more control and power on the backhand and it did its purpose. Over the last 2 years, his backhand has been doing well and may have possibly reached its peak yesterday. (let's hope not).

The trade-off was that his forehand wouldn't be at its lethal best (possibly the greatest shot in tennis, at its peak, along with the Sampras serve) and we saw that as well, yesterday.

The serve also seems to have been helped by the racquet.

These were my thoughts before the Final

It was a possibility for Nadal to move to 16 slams in 2017. If he wins Aus open, it would do a huge good to his confidence in facing top-10 players and he could win French open as well (will be assisted by Joker's lull in past few months)

Otherwise Nadal will stay at 14 forever and Federer moves to 18 raising the bar even higher. If Nadal loses to Federer, he will not become confident of facing the top 4 if not the top 10. 2016 is gonna repeat in 2017 as well. Every tom, dick will beat him in non-clay.

Before the start of Semifinal ( as a hardcore Federer follower)
I wanted Wawrinka to reach finals as he was the only player who can beat Nadal on any surface. I cried when Federer defeated Wawrinka because I don't want to see another beating in Nadal's hands. I prayed for Nadal's exit in the semis. Dimitrov nearly did it. But it was a touch and go match. Dimitrov couldn't stop him

After the semis are over, I watched the highlights of all grand-slam finals which Nadal lost (against Joker and Wawrinka). I even watched the highlights of Nadal-Soderling's french open match. Mentally I was prepared for Federer losing the final. So tuned to Aus open 2009 final hightlights. At that time all the predictions were on Federer's side because of 2 reasons
1) 1 extra day of rest for Fed and tiring 5 setter for Nadal against Verdasco
2) Hard-court (Till that time Nadal hasn't beaten Fed on hard-courts in big matches)

Sunday morning I started reading blogs about predictions for current finals.
90% in favour of Nadal. I thought only a fitness problem for Nadal can help Federer.

When the match started, the scorecard showed Federer's name on top and Nadal's name below
Of the matches I followed in this Aus open, the player's name on top won all the matches. I started to believe that Federer can win.
But over the entire duration of the match, my BP was high and shivering
I went to piss atleast a 15 times in that 3 hours times

Ivan Kaadhu Annai this Process started with Stephen - Once he became the Coach the first thing they worked is on his backhand - Stephen is Instrumental in Where FEd's backhand is as of Now !!!

No More Chip returns Vhn the Opponent Serves to his backhand, Even in the Rallies Less Slices - All in all this Process has Started 2-3 Years ago - Last couple of Seasons lo Kuda, If Not For Djoker's Invincible form (Once in a life time for), Fed would have Won atleast 2 Slams !

ninnati win ki main reasons
1) lighter balls
2) faster court
3) nadal is not as quick as he used to
4) Fed didn't give up.

lighter balls fed ki baga help avuthayi...he can play backhand much better..2011 french open finals lo koodaaaaa 4 sets lo odipoyinaaa baga adathaaadu fed nadal meeda...ade slam lo semis lo joker meeeda arachakam chesthaaaadu....they used lighter balls there too...

So
after Sachin no kirket (appudappudu follow ayina, it does not matter much)

but Fed's backhanded was singing all match long....Some of the shots, his footwork and court positioning was poetry in motion...

this was the difference between the Fed of the olden days..and yesterday..

biggest disappointment of course was probably his forehand..

the number of unforced errors on forehand were close to 60 :-(

Absolutely....Really enjoyed the game from a neutral perspective....

Both players came up with some great points in some crucial phases....but Fed's backhanded was singing all match long....Some of the shots, his footwork and court positioning was poetry in motion...

Was watching the final with 2 Nadal fans.....Their faces were pale by the end.....they were super confident Nadal wud pull this off....

All in all...A classic Match and one of Fed's greatest victory given the circumstances....

Yesterday he was in all out attack mode and that was one of the reasons for his success.

I never saw Fed attacking bull that too when King was pushed to a corner (w.r.t score).....amazing to see King attacking Nadal.....

Looking back, Federer played so few backhand slices yesterday. These have been his staple over the past few years as he has slowed down and needs to change the tempo of the point and get better court position. Yesterday he was in all out attack mode and that was one of the reasons for his success.

Unbelievable match - Federer overcome many demons and conclusively proved GOAT-hood. Coming back after a 6 months break is outstanding in these days of the uberphysical tennis matches. 5th set, one break down, not converting break points could have shattered many players, but Federer hung on, piled on the pressure and showed us the genius that he is capable of
