He used to do this during his peak 2013-2015. Not sure what changed after that he stopped doing it. If he wants more slamsunder his belt he has to be more aggressive in finishing points and working serve.

He will do it, I'm thinking once he gets his focus back on tennis....

Jalsa:

Was just browsing youtube when i saw this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CuXEySGNMfg

That's where it all started, apparently. They covered up the rumours saying Deepika is a friend of the Djokovic family, but well..... whatever the truth, it did impact his tennis. At least, they made sure it did not affect his career slam at FO....

//Gasquet's is the best. May be it dint get the recognition it deserved as Gasquet dint quite turn out into a big match player.. 3 yrs mundu i bet u wudn't have said the same abt Wawrinka like above as he dint win anything big yet.. so no surprises u hold such high views abt Waw's SHBH..

overall wen it comes to who made the best use of his SHBH (considering it's mostly seen as a liability in today's game).. it has to be Fed hands down.. so not really sure i agree Waw's is the best in HISTORY!//

Annai, Partially Agree - But 3-4 Yrs back Waw's Backhand isn't as Potent or as Stunning as it is Today ! Also Just See the Power he Generates on that SHBH and I don't Think Gasquet Even Comes close to WAW in this Aspect !

Another Vital thing that Differentiates Waw's SHBH from His Competitors in that Department is, the Percentage of down the line BH's he Makes from a Cross Court BH of His Opponent (If he is a Rightie and Cross Court Forehand from a Leftie Opponent) - Because That's the Toughest one to Make and Not Many do it that Often and with the ease that WAW does Match after Match !

Jalsa:

The second part of not being aggressive naturally and hitting or trying for winners till his back is against the wall is what i am talking about. Why doesn't he do that especially now that he is almost 30.

Under Becker, from mid-2014 to 2016, he was quite aggressive in finishing points. He will have to hire coaches with an aggressive mindset, going ahead.

Jalsa:

Also, his serve, somehow is not so incisive like say fed. Nadal apparently upped his serve speed by changing his grip or something.
These 2 areas will be very important in future to keep up with age, right?

This was also pretty good under Becker, he has been hitting the spots in clutch moments till mid-2016, then of course things started going haywire.

Nadal upping his serve speed is one of the tennis mysteries - it worked for exactly 2 weeks (US Open 2010) and after that his team said it's causing stress on the wrist or some such vague explanation.

I think he will continue to work on hitting the spots (particularly on first serves), the second serve is where he can choose to take more risk and go for it. I don't know how much speed he can add on the first serve, this deep into his career unless someone can unlock some serious glitch in his ball toss or serve motion - both historically unlikely.

I think his challenges will be the forehand and net game. He really needs to become more solid with his net game (one area i feel he has really neglected over the years) His forehand being the weaker wing, if he doesn't make sure it is up to peak, his backhand (as i said in an earlier post) even at its best cannot compensate (check 2009 and 2010 videos, his forehand was below par at that time) when it clicks (along with the serve you have 2011 and 2015, just fh = 2012,2013....)

Redclaw777:

Wud rate Waw's backhand the best SBH in the game coz it won him 3 Grandslams end of the day

I think his mental strength and forehand getting stronger are bigger contributors to that. His backhand has always been great.

BHs are a lesser factor in winning slams - even for Djokovic, Stan and Murray. The predominant match deciding shots are serves/forehands.

Even the greatest backhanded guys have to take the first shot on the forehand, after serve/return.

Gasquet's backhand is equally effective as Stan's on the slower surfaces and on Grass/Indoors (faster surfaces) Gasquet's backhand is better because Gasquet's slice and movement are better.

Slow courts (till FO) Nadal leads 17-4

Fast courts (Grass and after) Fed leads 6-3. (It was 6-1, but Federer slump lo 2013 lo dorkinappudu Cincinnati and Year ends lo cover chesadu Nadal)

When Fed is in slump 2013 - he still met Rafa thrice.

When Nadal is in slump from Jun 2014 to Dec 2016, Fed got to play him just one match.

That H2H is skewed fantastically in Nadal's favour starting with lefty and age advantage.

+~ .. exactly wat i wanted to reply.. "fantastically skewed" is spot on!!
one needs to dive into the detail before we can really discuss any further on Fed-Nadal's rivalry and why Nadal had been Fed's nemesis all career long..

17-4 vs 6-3 (6-1 excluding 2013) is right there at the first level of deep dive

while receiving serves also he delays intentionally
takes medical timeout when is in a bad position (nowadays other players also adopting this dirty trick)

That's another thing Fed is bad at. Djokovic pays back in kind - on this front.

Soderling/Rosol/Fognini/Kyrgios - you have to be ready to play dirty to nullify Nadal's game to an extent.

In that sense he is like the Australian/Caucasian cricket teams - push the limits as much as possible and Federer/Murray are like the Indian/SL teams of pre-Ganguly era.

2 times Fed played these games - Madrid 2009 - generally Nadal makes opponents wait for the toss, that match Fed waited till Nadal got there and made him wait.

The other was Davydenko - AO 2010 (Fed took a toilet break, because he decided everyone is using these tactics to disrupt opponents, so why not try it out)

Wud rate Waw's backhand the best SBH in the game coz it won him 3 Grandslams end of the day and at its peak saw destroy one of the greatest DHBH the world had seen in that FO 2015 finals.

Tht devastating swing and the release is most slingshot like and the raw power thunders it like a red hot missile from hell!

And what abt the destruction of Nadal for the first One nd a half sets in AO '14 Finals? The same Nadal who had the best of OHBH for breakfasts with this indomitable Left Forehand? And to see tht forehand get decimated by tht monster OHBH of Waw was stuff of legends.

Tht is a brutal backhand which gave nightmares to World No.1's and in my humble opinion is the greatest single handed backhand the world has ever seen.

You are welcome to give Aesthetic awards to Gasquet if you may. But for sheer awesomeness and deadly effectiveness....Nothing or no ones Single Backhand is even close.

That is true only on slow courts - AO and FO. Wimbledon and US OPEN, it is advantage Fed.

Match-up advantage, like other factors - age and night conditions for big matches, final round meetings favour Nadal, as you say but Wimbledon/USO are not forgone conclusions like AO/FO

Fed rated GFasquet very high right from their early days.....

Gasquet somehow didnt fulfill his potential.....height and resilience also may be ....

but i also think Waw's shot has been more effective and crushed opponents....where as gasquet's although to looks great.....didnt have that killer punch

Great points. Agree on both. Also, you have to give Gasquet's bh the edge because it is more effective on grass which is where the sports greatest tournament is conducted. Also on the aesthetic front, Gasquet's backhand would score higher..... my rating was considering all factors...

2012 which match? Rosol match? after that he's lost to Darcis in 1st round, Kyrgios in 4th, Dustin brown in 2nd round. He's been pushed to 5 sets by nobodies like Haase, Pettzchner etc at Wimbledon.

Anyways, he is obviously supreme as a player and person, but there have been a few things that fell his way, more than his other 2 rivals Fed/Djokovic.

They don't get highlighted because he has been get lucky to get the majority of the "anti Fed" fan group and Djokovic drew the short straw and doesn't have enough fanbase (relatively), so his weaknesses/flaws get highlighted than Nadal's (also ofcourse Djokovic/Serbia angle too)

I would be surprised if he doesn't have 2nd most winners among Big4...... he generally likes to play safe till things really get bad - not naturally aggressive that way, but when he is in his elements, he's very Agassi/Federer like and will not let go of the baseline....

The second part of not being aggressive naturally and hitting or trying for winners till his back is against the wall is what i am talking about. I would be surprised if he doesn't have 2nd most winners among Big4...... he generally likes to play safe till things really get bad - not naturally aggressive that way, but when he is in his elements, he's very Agassi/Federer like and will not let go of the baseline....

I think he's closer to the aggressive power baseliners like lendl/Agassi/Nalbandian than counterpunchers like Murray/Nadal and a host of clay courters

Gasquet's is the best. May be it dint get the recognition it deserved as Gasquet dint quite turn out into a big match player.. 3 yrs mundu i bet u wudn't have said the same abt Wawrinka like above as he dint win anything big yet.. so no surprises u hold such high views abt Waw's SHBH..

overall wen it comes to who made the best use of his SHBH (considering it's mostly seen as a liability in today's game).. it has to be Fed hands down.. so not really sure i agree Waw's is the best in HISTORY!

Vth Nadal into Finals, Its as Tough as It Could get For FED to Win the Title - FED would have Loved to Face a Djoker in his Prime Time than Nadal :-)

Again It Would be The Same Old Saga - Fed's Cross Court Backhand Landing into the Comfort Zone of Nadal (Forehand) and he Pouncing on Those :-)

I Sincerely Wish Some Magic Happens and FED Add this Title to His Kitty

:-) Only 3 matches lost in GS when he wins first set ( all 3 in GS finals 2014, 2015 FO, 2016 USO) totally crazy stat.....

Sachin:

idi jaragalante fed should win this AO. nadal gelisthe the differenc e just 2 ayipodddi..

I think if Fed misses here, he will make up at Wimbledon/USO. I am pretty sure he is already feeling he's achieved more than he expected this AO.

Remember 2009? Nadal won AO and Fed was 1-12 against Fed/Djokovic/Murray. End of the year? Fed ends No.1 and wins 2 slams to 1....

Fed is lambe race ka goda. He may not match-up fairly on the 5th set records and other such short term factors, but over an entire career, he has been as resilient as Nadal has been with his injuries.

Remember - Fed was as much of a rival of Djokovic as Nadal was, I wouldn't be surprised if he turns out be a similar foe to Murray on par with Djokovic.

Abhi tho picture baaki hai bhidu...... the season has just begun... Stay positive - That is Fed's biggest strength - Of all the great champions, he has actually had more heartbreaks Think about super talented players like Safin, Gasquet, Dimitrov, Kyrgios, McEnroe, Mecir, Rios - people have gone crazy unable to put the Genius they have been endowed to achieve "success" Fed's optimism is the reason he has been able to do this way better than those players.... I think it will see him through the finish line.....

in my view its the record of nadal against fed.....which makes it tricky...to call it...

My prediction...Fed will win.....justice served overall.....Fed deserves to win that number.....but Nadal doesnt deserve any less......

here are personal issues (affair with Deepika Padukone is the rumour - not confirmed), but it is common the guy peaked - winning 4 slams in a row and a banner year in 2015 - on par with Fed's 2006 and Laver's 1969 as the greatest tennis years of all time.

Also, he's 30 (will be when he next plays a slam) - so like all players he will have to recalibrate his game with the slowed down reflexes and movement and abilities. Fed had it in 2010 n again in 2013 and possibly 2016.

Nadal has seen it from mid- 2014 till end of 2016.... so, nothing out of the blue...

I am thinking he will be back soon, most probably around US open or after.... (my guess)

If you put Djokovic/Fed/Nadal in any decade, there is a high chance Fed/Djokovic will put similar numbers, but Nadal's numbers - particularly outside clay will take a beating

Djokovic wudn't be at the same level as current times still.. Nadal is the biggest beneficiary of the times we are currently in with court conditions and what not.. and Djokovic follows behind.. although may not be a close second

Yeah, but he gets platelet-rich plasma therapy - which was once banned by WADA but later legalized and there are theories on why it maybe illegal.

He has definitely been more aided by advanced medicine and racquet/string technology than Federer/Djokovic. He is a product of the times we live in, more than, Federer - whose game is timelesss and to extent even Djokovic who is better than Nadal on 4/5th of the tennis calendar.

If you put Djokovic/Fed/Nadal in any decade, there is a high chance Fed/Djokovic will put similar numbers, but Nadal's numbers - particularly outside clay will take a beating.

Nadal kuda US open 2013 lo gelavaganey, next year ki Fed record equal annaru..Once you are near your 30s, it becomes hard to perform the same level..

I don't think anyone has that mental strength as Rafa/Fed has in the open era..

I think mentally Djokovic is stronger than Rafa. His 5th set records, and other pressure factors are better than Rafa's numbers.

Also, Djokovic, like Fed has less mileage - because when he wins, he runs through matches under an hr in best of 2 and best of 3.

Also Djokovic is the better player than Nadal at 3 out of 4 slams (possibly even 4 at this stage in their careers)....

Fed-Djokovic-Nadal 1-2-3 finish at the slam count is the most probable scenario....

Possibly the same with No.1 ranking and titles and year end championship titles.

Masters - Djokovic/Nadal/Fed 1-2-3 likely finish.

Let's see how things unfold...

If Fed wins tomorrow, count will be 18, 14, 12,

I think Nole has another 3 slams in him.

Nadal and Federer will have equal chances from here on, is what i feel - Fed has 3 slams he is good at Nadal has 1.

Even in 2013, my stance was Fed will end with more slam count and very likely that Djokovic will overtake Nadal.

So, sticking by that....

The overall quality of this match and the Federer-Wawrinka match were not of the level that we would have expected from these two. They have been scrappy, ugly wins.

credit to Stan/Grigor for just being relentless and not letting it go. This was basically how GS business end used to be before Fed/Djokovic (mostly on all surfaces/conditions) and Nadal (mostly on clay) made them pretty one sided affairs.

Also both are playing big matches after considerable break. (Federer after 6 months of no match play) and Nadal in his first GS semifinal in nearly 3 years......

"As neutrals for this Tournament....Wud love to see a Fed-Rafa Final....and Hope the Best Man Wins... "

>>>> True - as an event, it is just super spectacular, just that when 8 out of 11 GS encounters have already happened on slower courts, in favour of the younger athlete, you wish the old man would catch a break....

"Whoever wins shall hav a one-up on the Djoker btw...but still this is nostalgia."

>>>>> True, a tough spot for Djokovic fans.... but he has age on his side. Another twist in the 3 way battle....

"Dmitrov better not spoil the Tennis Worlds' fantasy match-up.....He wud be the fav in Finals if he manages to trump Nadal. "

That's true, particularly with Federer taking that MTO (a very huge rarity for him) and of course with all the tennis he's already played this tournament - 2 five setters - another rarity for him.....

However, I think bookies will still favour Fed in a Fed-Dimitrov final, as they would favour Nadal in a Fedal showdown.....

Nada wins 3rd, almost a certainty now, Fedal35....

LOL.....We dont need Baby Fed in the finals wen we have the real Deal....

Spoken like a real Djokovic fan :D Speak for yourself, mister! Fed nation doesn't want to deal with Rafa anywhere on the slow courts (God knows the old man has had a disproportionately high number of those).

We need atleast the next 10 Fedal matches to be only AFTER Wimbledon!

Redclaw777:

Unable to watch the match but heard quality in the 2nd set wasnt great....

Dimitrov didn't let his level drop and Nadal is getting edgy that a shbh guy is still lingering around.....

This is possibly as good as any single hand backhand player can play in these conditions and Dimitrov is still trailing

As good as Federer has played, unless he plays like Berdych match, it would be a super achievement to win even one set

Wish the final was at 2 pm like Wimbledon or FO, the day time helps with faster courts, so some cheap points for servers
