They were marketed as great because the investment discretion is owned by the employee. main difference between 401k and pension is the risk is transferred to employee from employer. there is no guarantees anywhere unless you work for 'stable' government. Private companies end up bankrupt ( latest is GM) due to badly managed pension plans. Indian central government pension fund was supposedly one of the best maintained and reliable funds. How does private companies work in India. Do they offer pension plans? 401k is still bettter than nothing. As long as you diversify, risk is very reasonable | ||
