@Raju: I did travel with my kid's expired(and renewed) US passports and with PIO card(which got the expired old US passport number). No issues. I always carry my old passports (regardless of the reason) or its copies in my check in(at least first two pages, last one page copy) when I travel. You typically dont need to show old passports unless and otherwise they ask for it. In my last India travel, no one has asked for the previous passport at any port of entries). | ||

LoL.. root bottom, I am prepared to pay if it comes(Government of India needs to pass an ordinance to get PIOs invalid, in the government gazette). Second point: If I go for OCI in lieu with my PIOs, my kids US passports gets expired sometime in the mean while, at that point, I need to re-apply for OCI if I move to OCI now itself. In other words, I may end up in paying OCI application fee at that time anyways with OCI. So, best bet would be to hang on with PIO as much as we can. :-) | ||

This is what exactly I am buying into ... I am taking a chance if MEA of GOI is going to force me to convert PIO to OCI by paying fee(after Dec 31st of 2016). As per the existing Government gazette, all PIOs are considered as OCI with lifetime validity. And PIO has no rule to get reapplied when there is a change in the underlying Passport. So, I believe keeping PIO is the best bet at this moment. | ||

Considering the concerns and issues related to this conversion from PIO card to OCI card, it has been decided that PIO cards already issued continue to be valid documents. Applying for OCI cards in lieu of PIO cards at the website indicated above will be optional for the applicant until further instructions. All concerned are hereby informed that there is no deadline for conversion from PIO card to OCI cards. However, we urge all PIO card holders to apply for change to OCI cards for uniformity sake. However, when passports are changed / renewed, applicants may apply for miscellaneous services to update their passport details in the OCI cards. 4. As conveyed earlier, endorsements stating that existing PIO cards are valid for life would be made at the first immigration point with which the card holder comes into contact, be it an Indian Mission, an FRRO or an immigration check-point. These endorsements/stamps would, however, not be mandatory. | ||

Bunch of idiots at CKGS (like any other Consulate services agency). The word MUST in the above statement is misleading. If you want to apply for OCI in lieu with PIO, you must apply before Dec 31st. If you dont want to apply for it, nothing was mentioned what would happen :-) which is not clear for them or for MEA of GOI. I am not gonna apply for OCI as far as I can since OCI triggers a reapply for each of the underlying passport update. | ||

At this time, CKGS does not have any information on rules post 31st December, 2016. My kids passports have expired. New passports apply seyyaali. Kothavi vachetappatiki it will be around January 20th. Not sure whether I can apply PIO to OCI conversion with old passports and finally send the new passports No Signature | ||
