In a major move that could put hundreds of political parties across the country on their backfoot, the Election Commission of India has proposed to the centre to ban donations above Rs.1,900 from anonymous sources.

EC also proposed that political parties should slash the limit for accepting donations from Rs.20,000 to Rs.2,000 apart from maintaining accounts for all donations and getting those accounts audited and even submit those audit books to the EC.

The EC wanted the centre to make these amendments in the Representation of the People Act, 1951. The EC's recommendations are with the Law Commission already.

EC's latest proposal to centre is seen as part of its primary motive to bring in transparency in political funding and curb black money in Indian politics in the wake of demonetization.

Political parties get hundreds of crores as donations from common people and various organisations. However, the parties do not furnish all the details of their donations and use this money in shady ways during elections.
