Policy genius has reviewed each policy highlighting pros & cons..NY Life could be definitely better..but problem with agent is they try to sell life+ premium is def higher.. and it would be 3-5 years before you realise its not good and drop out (or the stats say so).. lump sum cash in life insurance is when kids are past 25 or 30 years..but before that comes college.. its a poor investment choice.. to get best of both worlds.. get the quote from Policy genius.. ask if agent can beat or let her tell why online quote is bad and decide.. you have to look at two things when taking coverage amount.. 1. Do you want the dependents to be covered temporarily to clear the debts? If spouse works then have to fit the living expense with one income, may have to cut down the living style. If does not work then should plan going back to India with the remaining insurance amount. 2. Do you want the dependents to be continued to have the same life where they live without your income? In this case you have to take the coverage amount which gives the return that should be sufficient your current living monthly expenses or standard. So, for example if you take $1M coverage you are looking at $70K to $80K income with expecing 7 to 8% return per annum. | ||

Term life ki any B+ and above rated insurance are good. I preferred talking to agent but online options are equally good these days. Metlife, Transamerica, prudential, AIG are some you can look into. Term should be very comparable in price. mid 30's for a policy of 1M you should be looking at 900 - 1200 /yr. There may be better deals as mentioned in this thread. I used to have employee plan for long time. I discontinued it and went with my own around 40. the price changes significantly from 30's to 40's | ||

There are some federal short term disability(upto 12 months) covered by Social security but it has several conditions statutory 'short term(6 months) ' disability available is only in 3 - 4 states (NY, CA included). This is standard benefit that gets you 50% of salary maxed at 1000/week. So if you live in those states and employed you are covered. But the remaining 40+ states don't have it mandatory.
