The institution which came out with its reputation most tarnished is the RBI. The RBI has been one of our institutions that has retained its independence, its reputation and efficiency. Now it comes out with its brand in tatters - showing the ineptness under the current dispensation and how it has allowed to be browbeaten by the govt and because of it has had to change its policies every single day. It has been 17 days since this began, after the initial enthusiasm over the idea, it is turning out to be a failure on an epic scale. The scale of the implementation ineptitude is immense. - Queues are reducing at banks and ATMs - not because people have got the cash they need but people do not want to waste time and find that the ATMs/ Banks do not have cash. They are just conserving what they have. - The impact on the GDP for next 2-3 quarters is going to be very significant. If at the end of the exercise we find that only 1-2 lakh crores were identified as "black" but it results in a GDP hit of 1-2% for 3 quarters, is it even worth it in the first place. An objective assessment of the costs and benefits needs to be made. - Unless we reduce the gatekeeper role for many people in our bureaucracy, government bodies, etc there can be no end to the corruption and black money. Administrative reforms, police reforms, etc all have to happen simultaneously. Otherwise it will end up clearing the stock but not the flow. - Though one can be supercilious about it, black money does have a valuable role in the mainline economy. And couple this with a flight of money back to the US expecting a Trump era fiscal deficit fuelled bond yield hikes in US, then the scope for interest rate cuts are limited. - To put the blame for everything on the implementation is shifting the blame for poor planning, getting a trusted team in place, etc etc. Poor admin skills have been evident. The only person who has come out of this smelling of roses is the Indian common man, who is willing to stand in queues for hours to get what he legally owns.
