Kumon is not necessary. If we cannot teach basic arithmetic at that level it is of no use. For both of my kids I did not go to kumon, but I see many kids in my group attends.

Not required

My son is doing good with steady growth and more importantly enjoying homework/ studying...we are happy with his performance and we never compare them with other kids.

Will try to encourage/push for a little more as suggested by many and see how he reacts. Thanks again

My sincere advice is not to put kids in rate race

If they can get it with min push or natural abilities than encourage them

That is what we did for my son, it was tremendous amount of peer pressure, when they get the score cards and other results

Even when he is topper in the school we never used to discuss with any body, always maintain low

People were very curious about my son, continuous calls from friends

Do what suits to u r kids, u know better

comparing with other kids at this young age is not a good thing, but lil bit push is definitely needed
else
kids spend hours and hours watching tv /video games/pokemon blah blah and they lose focus/seriousness

thumb rules if your kid is scoring 60% than push for 70% don't push for 90%

if you kid is at 50% and you are pushing him/her 70% than there is a problem

parents kante everi ki ekkuva teleedu valla kids kosam

if your kid is interested in some subjects/sports/activities encourage them according to their taste, don't ask him to do what you like,

kids do need some push,

never compare or put mental pressure on kids, more importantly parents need to learn how to handle peer pressure,

my daughter is in gifted, we never tried to put her in. but they conducted a test end of 3rd grade and I got a letter saying she's put into gifted program. So far no issues being given some extra things to work on. this is in bay area.

my opinion don't stress it, if the kid got talent they will get into it.

All kids need to exposure at different time, and timely intervention till they become self dependent. But gifted is one such exposure

even if a kids doesn't attend, and goes for good middle and high school, that covers their gaps

that is the key , good schools aakada sir .. very few in rich neighbor hoods, 25 kids ki one elementary teacher .. mostly no teaching ,

My personal opinion is , if you cannot enrich your kid with additional programs , they cannot compete in future ..
Middleschool math time ki , they should have their basics strong in mutiplication, fractions etc

Guys donot go with an idea, whether child is gifted naturally or not. it is always our failure to see something special in a child, given the environment

Gifted program gives good academic start that also includes good analytical thinking. thats it. nothing special about that

even if a kids doesn't attend, and goes for good middle and high school, that covers their gaps

practice makes them perfect kadha. that is a personal choice. i think 6 months coaching is not a bad thing. elgau kumon, best brains ko, eye level, dolphin ila edho oka dhaniki pampisthamu kadha. adi manesi dheniki pampsithe sari. My neighbour was kid. they put her in coaching. she was getting in 70 and 80 instead of 90 as they thought she was. these practice test will also help you to assess what were her skills in competition.

That was my point, you don't need coaching if your kid is gifted. Irrespective of exam performance, teachers csn still push your kid into this if they think he or she is gifted.

please tell me what gifted program is

It is an accelerated learning program offered by different school districts according to the kids learning rate

Many places school districts conduct the exams, interested people can do it with individual physiologist and submit the report

These classes are separate from regular in the schools , where accelerated learning comared to that grade happens. good program

Ultimately all kids normalize and do well when their brains develop to assimilate, only they differ by their age in blooming.

Thanks for your valuable inputs, much appreciated...

I strongly agree with you about the blooming part being different for each kid. I really want my kid to enjoy his childhood responsibly while balancing education and other activities.

Teachers can and do recommend kids into these programs if they notice that kid is naturally gifted...

Will all these help them in future for pursuing higher education?

each level has separate exams. again it depend on your county. you have to check the website to know how students are taken at each level. GT schools will provide an environment of early achieving minds that could propel him.

Intha discussion waste. like is said try it out by coaching. if he or she makes it good, no also good. keep moving on.

Nope, I'm trying to understand if I am doing something wrong. Trying to think in a different perspective and hence seeking Peddala Salaha

Please help me understand the real benefit of this program.

Kids get used to hard work, and little advanced topics from the lower classes which will orient their brains , to help in middle school

Nothing extra special is going to happen on top of that

get him join in coaching for 6 months

if naturally gifted, why coaching? Teachers can and do recommend kids into these programs if they notice that kid is naturally gifted...

Usually Each School District In your area offers gifted programs of different kinds

Please visit those websites and verify

Self contained gifted programs effectiveness depends on teacher. some teachers really elevate kids abilities by challenging them as per their needs

some teachers go in conventional way without challenging kids much , in turn make it as a couple of steps lower to actual program

Some teacher go overboard without considering the age of the children, makes counter productive

Leaving completely to the teacher's perspective is the drawback of these gifted programs

Ultimately all kids normalize and do well when their brains develop to assimilate, only they differ by their age in blooming.

Examples
- A kid very good at social skills, may not be exceeding in academics, later he may develop those skills
- A kid who is very good at academic , may not be good at social, later he may develop those skills

But there are some genuine skills which are inborn due to their gene pool, that are specific to individual.

It differs from kid to kid. If your kid is unable to handle stress, take him off and put back in public school.

Last week I had a chat with a couple whose kid is in Gifted program.
1) They are very happy with that. They agree that Its sometimes little stressful for kid but they are ok with that.
2) They said that didn't go for Private only because they got kid admitted into gifted program.
3)But looks like making it into gifted program is tough as per them 1 out of 100 ( 99 percentile) gets admission into gifted program. They say that the kid went to private school in kinder garten and it made easy for him to crack the test.

Real question is...Should we pursue it or not?

By default, I've seen Indian parents pushing their kids for this. In the end they complain that the kids are being bombarded by lot of homework and feel guilty that their childhood is being robbed from them.

I can't decide what's right or wrong...Hence experts/ seniors opinion is very valuable in my case.

GT programs differ by state to state. You can join in multiple levels. if you think your kid is naturally talented, go for it. get him join in coaching for 6 months and let him try. if eh cant make it, he can try for another program after couple of years. it is an experience and also gives us assessment where he stands academically

This topic might have been beaten to death in the past. If so, please someone share the links to those...

We don't push our kids to participate in race comparing other's kids. We thought of letting kids enjoy childhood and make education a pleasant journey than them feeling like a race to be on top.

We wanted to make sure if what we are doing is right or are we making a big mistake.

So far my Son's progress have been great overall and he is still in first grade.

I'd like to get suggestions/ advise from senior parents and understand the advantages/ disadvantages of gifted program.

Thanks for all your inputs in advance.
